It's worrying how far - not even close to the list - Sutter and Clark are and have fallen. For second & third round draft picks in just '18, it's tough to see any NHL futures for them, unless they really hit another gear in their development this year - if there's a season - and next.

Thoughts? @Langway @hb11xchamps

Sutter and Clark had their early preseason injuries which really set the tone for the rest of the season. They were already far behind everyone else in terms of fitness and game action. When they got healthy they rotated in as 4th liners, and Clark sometimes bumped up a line or two if he had to. Out of the two, Clark seems like the better prospect to me. Sutter is big and slow and mainly played center. Clark was a decent skater but needs to add a good amount of muscle to his body to accommodate his more physical style. Other than that, it was tough to get a really good read on them with their limited game action due to injuries and the pandemic

I think the Leason pick looks to be a bust as well. I’d forgotten he was a 2nd rounder. The Protas pick certainly lessens the pain of it all, but still.....I think it’s going to be a wasted 2nd rounder.

hopefully I am wrong

@hb11xchamps do you think it's more of a testament to Nardella or more of an indictment regarding the status of our pipeline that he shot up to #7 this year?

Any early predictions for risers and fallers from this list for next season? I'll go first:

Riser: Martin Hugo Has. Hopefully with a solid season and a strong showing in the WJC we're talking about him as a value pick in the 5th round. Him being a RHD will also push him up the lists in a bit given how barren that position is in the pipeline. HM:
Faller: Shane Gersich. His high-water mark will be the few games he played during the Cup run.

Leason was an overager who wasn't eligible to return to juniors so he had to jump directly to Hershey where he admittedly struggled to adjust to the pro game. Agreed that he didn't have the best season but he's only a year removed from being widely panned as one of if not the steal of the draft so I'm not ready to call him a bust yet. He is a guy though whose development could be really hurt by Covid.

As a '99 Leason could have returned to the WHL last season for his overage season. Looking back that may have been the better strategy given that he still had a lot of room to fill out and areas to improve upon. Loads of ice-time could have helped his skating/stamina to a greater extent along with just confidence generally in dummying that league again. Then again, you don't really see players on that level returning as overagers. Former teammate Noah Gregor comes to mind but he hadn't dominated to that extent prior to his overage season and wasn't as high of a pick. I can't recall too many high picks that return as OAers, particularly if signed by their drafting team.

He's a project and hopefully he's used the time off to continue to progress physically. The main issue for him and the likes of Clark and Sutter is managing enough quality ice-time to go around for them. Some of it will have to be earned but it can be tough for players like this to rotate in and out of the AHL lineup without at times having the luxury of an established role. Hard to gain and establish confidence at that level while trying to figure it out but that's the grind.

I’d say it’s more of Nardella having a breakout year, but I’m sure our pipeline does come into play. There really isn’t an offensively gifted Dman like Nardella in our pipeline currently, which helped him rise in the rankings as well IMO. I would say it’s definitely deserved. There were plenty of bodies in Hershey and it took forever for Nardella to be given a chance (#freeNardella was a thing for a bit), but once he was given his chance he flourished and never came out of the lineup.

Riser for me: Hunter Shepard. Technically not Washington’s property yet. I’m banking on him having a solid season in Hershey/SC and earning an NHL ELC. He was just reassigned to SC for their training camp as the ECHL tries to get underway.

Faller: Riat. He hasn’t been to NA in years. If there’s an AHL season it will be an interesting one for him. Need him to have a solid rookie campaign. He had a steep rise in the rankings this go around from #20 to #8

Can’t believe some of the players taken over Joe Snivley here.
Snively is 24 years old and 5'9" with one pro season in which he did okay, but nothing particularly noteworthy. What NHL future do you see for him?

He's a nice story for a hometown kid, but he's not a particularly promising NHL prospect.
