Unpopular but I think Guentzel is a top 15 winger

I like Guentzel and in a vacuum the idea of calling him a top 15 winger sounds ok to me - but I can't justify putting a player who scores 76 points playing on Crosby's wing full time (and on the loaded Pitt power play) over a winger who scored 92 points on a worst team - Huberdeau.

That’s why I think people won’t consider Guentzel a top winger because they see him as a product of Sidney Crosby.

And by the way, Guentzel doesn’t play on the first PP unit, his PP minutes are very limited and he still managed to score 40 goals last season. Not to mention that he has a very impressive playoff resume so far and he’s a pretty good overall player.
Huberdeau being on a worst team doesn’t really affect his individual stats, cause he’s still playing top minutes every game (and on the first PP unit), something Guentzel didn’t really have the chance to do yet.

He doesn’t play on the PP1, and the Pens play their PP2 the least out of anyone leaguewide.

Guentzel is a complimentary player, but he’s not a product of Crosby. Put him with any 1C in the league and he’d be extremely productive. Truly one of the smartest players I’ve ever watched. Oozes hockey IQ.

That said I took Tarasenko here. But Jake should be top 20 imo.

I'll take Tkachuk here. I watched that dude just dominate games last season.

Heart says Tarasenko, but honestly after 1 down year I'm not going to dump on Benn just yet. He's a PPG power forward. If I'm drafting a team from scratch and the guys above are my option, I'm taking him. At least for another year or two.

Benn, Tarasenko and Huberdeau should be next in some order. It's hard to decide between them, but I'll take Tarasenko for his goal scoring.

Just to clarify, Guentzel didn't get top PP unit minutes other than if Hornqvist or Malkin was hurt. A healthy Pens' top unit didn't include Guentzel, so most of what he did last year was at 5on5.

Meh he was pretty invisible in our series against the flames. He’s still a ways out in this ranking imo.

Night and day difference between Timo Meier and Matthew Tkachuk Vs. the Avalanche.

Guentzel had the best 5-on-5 production of anybody left on this list and quite a few players above him, but it’s fair to be skeptical of how much of that production is really his own doing after seeing what Crosby once did for the 5-on-5 production of a player like Conor Sheary.

Not saying people should select him right now. I was just clarifying for that poster who listed playing on the top PP as one of the reasons his totals may be inflated that he didn't actually play on the top unit, not unless either Hornqvist or Malkin were injured.

Also, I don't think people should just automatically assume Guentzel's success is because he plays with Crosby. Guentzel's the first winger in Crosby's entire career that's scored 40 goals next to him. So clearly Guentzel's shown he's got the goal scoring ability to convert those chances. Also, people overlook the fact that Crosby himself benefited from Guentzel this past season. Crosby hadn't scored 100 points since his Art Ross year in 2014, yet reached that total last year in large part because of how good both of them were for each other.
