======================
I've had an idea. Let's decide who the greatest players in Avalanche history are.
  • You decide what "greatest" means.
  • Only judge players based on their Avalanche careers. This means no extra points for Sakic's time with the Nordiques, or Ray Bourque's time with the Bruins.
  • Poll will be open for a few days.
  • Each time you vote, suggest a player who should be added for the next round.
  • If there's no consensus on who should be added I'll just pick the next player who's played the most games.
  • Here's a list of everyone: Colorado Avalanche all-time player list at hockeydb.com

If Wolski doesn't make 50, that's some old-timey bullshit. We're out here voting for goons from 1995, and the Minnesota Wild's best players they've ever had even though they're not that good.

Add Hejda. Or Chris Dingman (contradicting myself so quickly).

What did Wolski do? He was a middling scorer for a few years on a bubble team who ended up flaming out after a few years. He's at best the 5th best player to even wear #8 for the Avalanche.

If there's one thing this exercise taught me, it's that we should stop at 25 next time, if there is one.

Well what the hell did Skrastins do then in three and a half seasons except die later?

Now if you excuse me, I have a lunch date with Satan.

I am pretty sure he was our #2 dman those seasons. Had the NHL Ironman record for a while. Wasn’t a guy who scored or put all kinds of points on the board but was pretty dang solid defensively. Him and Wolski both suffered from playing for some pretty dismal teams.

They also benefited it from it as well. Wolski was given a much longer leash with his, um...consistency issues because we sucked. Shit would not have flown under Jared Bednar.

Skrastins on the other hand really gave his everything. I just happen to think we might have gotten the last year or two of his highest period. The lockout robbed us of one. Because of our D, he played higher up than he should have but I've got nothing but respect for him. His death was extremely tragic but I wouldn't use that as a reason to vote someone a great Avalanche. We'd have to add Salei as well and as much as I liked Rusty I'm not voting for him as a top 50 Great Avalanche.

Skrast was the kind of guy who would throw himself in front of anything to stop a goal. The sort of guy who would wind up the spreadsheet nerds nowadays. Worth his weight in gold.
