I watched the replays like five or six times on the DVR after the game wondering about intent... It seems like Hertl drops his head a bit even though he sees Folin coming. The head to head then Folin's shoulder to Hertl's jaw it looks really bad. Like knockout punch kinda bad. I don't think Folin did it intentionally, but there have been other unintentional hits to the head that have garnered penalties in game as well as suspensions/fines. I'm not sure about Folin's previous history. I couldn't find anything about him on NHL player safety website. Damage done though.

I hope Hertl is not concussed. I am curious as to why he seems to put his head down as it seems like he saw him coming? Anyone see something different?

Given how shaky and woozy he was getting off the ice after the hit I have to imagine that by definition he has a concussion. The real question is whether or not there are any lingering symptons or issues that will keep him off the ice for a period of time. Basically any big hit to the head that rattles you that hard, whether you lose consciousness or not, is a concussion.

He had the awkward wobble but once he got up he seemed coherent. Not that it really means anything, cant really measure concussions. Hopefully he feels better in a couple games and it doesnt linger.

Yeah, I'm just pointing out that it doesn't take much to have a "concussion"...we usually just hear about the bad ones that linger, but any jarring hit to the head that stuns you like that probably gave you at least a minor one.

Concussions are wild. Ive had like 5, all from various speeds and angles of contact. Nothing ever lingered luckily, my little brother is at 10+ haha he has a little twitch now but it never led to any long term problems. If that sounds weird we rode snowboards for monies for a long time haha. A world that seems to have a lot of concussion "specialists".

Yeah, I wanted to get out my pitchfork but it just looked like an unfortunate accident. Who knows why Hertl put his head down, maybe to get a bit smaller and/or brace for the hit?

Yah, makes sense to tuck in your chin when you see it coming. Initially when watching the first time I thought he got Folin's shoulder in the chest and had the wind knocked out of him. Prolly my teal-colored shades... When I saw the replays I was like shit, Hertl got knocked the f*** out. :'(

He was trying to toe drag Folin. He looked down at the puck and it went poorly. He wasn’t prepared for a hit or bracing for a hit. If Hertl had any inkling a hit was coming he would have braced for it and protected himself.

at first it looked like he just got the wind knocked out of him, but i doubt that's the case. :/

Yea, rocked right on the chin, definitely a tough spot to take a hit. Don't think anything dirty about the check, just unfortunate timing. Hopefully Hertl isn't out too long, or at all.

Yeah as much as I wanted to scream dirty hit, its just simply isn't. Did not look like one when it happened, and that slow mo still looks innocent.

Honestly, not sure what Hertl's plan was there, he does not really seem to be attempting to deke and failing, he does not really prepare for a hit either despite clearly looking at the player coming, then puts his head back down and skates in a straight line....

It's literally the "keep your head up kid" hit.

He’s going to have a sore jaw for sure. Hopefully it’s not a concussion. This definitely looks like Hertl’s breakout year if he can keep himself healthy

Hope Hertl gets better as soon as possible (though doesn't rush back until he's all better). Given his absence though, the above lines look not so bad. I'd probably swap 40 and 23, but I don't have a strong opinion about it.

If I ever come across a magic boombox and Sinbad from Shazaam pops out and the genie grants me three wishes, one of them will be that our beautiful baby boy Hertl never gets hert again.

This is breaking my heart.

Folin needs to get dumpstered. We don't play them again, but this is bull****.

Get better soon Hertl

Perhaps you are just being overly exuberant, but I’d place the onus for the outcome of that hit squarely with Hertl. Not only did he not protect himself but he put himself in an extremely vulnerable position. I didn’t see anything malicious by Folin at all.

To be clear, I like what the league is doing to protect players and for the most part I think they’ve done a good job changing the way the game is played for the better. But there’s no way of eliminating all injuries/concussions short of removing all contact. In this case I simply think Hertl got caught putting his head down at just about the worst time.
