The National Film Board of Canada hosts several hundred archived films on its website, one of which is a fantastic 10-minute documentary of Canadian hockey in 1953.

It starts with local and junior leagues, and moves up the ranks. Included are:

    - Slow-mo film of Jean Beliveau dominating his junior opponents
    - Film of the stripes and ice being laid in Maple Leaf Gardens
    - Game film of a match between the Habs and Wings, featuring all the stars you'd expect
    - A cameo by Newsy Lalonde
    - Some amusing commentary about how expensive and commercial the game has become

Great play by #4 in white, starting at about 9:44.
