Discovered a new podcast recently: Twenty Thousand Hertz. Lots of interesting things involving sound. From the mystery hum in Windsor ON to how the Disney Imagineers use sound to immerse folks in the lands and rides.

Here's an episode on hearing loss. (Also available on most podcast servers)

(And unfortunately, I am "normal" is losing the ranges for my age.)

I once made a computer program in middle school to identify what ranges of sound I could hear.

Even back then I couldn't get anywhere near 20,000 and the sounds got irritating well below that number. Dog whistles must be horrible, man.

I've recently become aware of tinnitus in myself. A lot of adults have it, but it's a matter of whether it exceeds the annoyance threshold. I tend to notice it at mornings and nights. Sometimes I also have trouble hearing people talk to me if they have a soft voice. I hope it doesn't get too much worse.

I have noticed tinnitus in recent months and it's making me reluctant to continue attending NHL games without earplugs. It's that moment of lying in bed listening to tinnitus and then thinking, did I really need to get blasted with all that concert-level noise tonight?

I learned about my tinnitus during university, around the same time I learned that plenty of medications can cause hearing loss if taken when you have any physical damage to your ears (an ear infection that you didn't know you had yet, for example). Minor case that hasn't gotten any worse but I've pretty much passed on invitations to anything loud since then.

I have tinnitus.. too many years playing drums as a kid without ear protection then a blow out when I forgot my ear plugs to a Tool concert.

Luckily my wife also likes to fall asleep with the TV on, so I drown it out for the most part. I've been extremely careful ever since, I don't want it getting worse until they find a cure.

One interesting thing about tinnitus is it will often be more noticeable if you think about it. Sitting here reading this mine has kicked in...

Tinnitus is basically the brain making up noise to replace what it isn't getting through the hearing apparatus but thinks it should be getting. It is technically a hallucination. Most of the time it's due to hearing loss.
