Thanks ST! How are you doing with yours?
Excellent! Now that I am mostly grain free (I do have a corn tortilla or tiny serving of rice when out to dinner) and sugar free, I feel like I am in my 20's again energy wise. I am so livid that the first two Celiac's test came back negative years ago- my Dad had and my daughter has it. My current doctor was upset that they didn't do a biopsy, seeing that I had the same symptoms my Dad/daughter did. All this time wasted...... rather than dwell on it, I am just staying positive and consider it a learning experience for future generations of the Rhian family.

Excellent,I continue to read about suffererers of all kinds of maladies getting reversal with no grain,no sugar. I would advise to normalize your Vit D,a daily dose of magnesium, iodine and fish oil,and since you do partake in rice and corn,a 50b probiotic.

With summer quickly approaching, I'll be scaling back the workouts very slightly. It's just so hot and humid. My plan is to make it till June 1 before adjusting.

I've gained close to 10 lbs. to go along with some strength gains. It's odd - my clothes still fit, but I can't see any new muscle. Maybe I need a new scale? ;)

Chin-ups were never one of my better exercises, but I wanted to see if the added weight would prevent me from doing them. I manage 3 sets with reps of 5,4, & 4. Not great, but about my norm.

I replaced my barbell and I'm pretty sure it's slightly lighter than my previous one, since my reps increased for most of my lifts.

The (somewhat) warmer weather has increased my energy level and I’ve been running just about every day.

Makes a big difference.

My appetite has been ridiculous as of late, but it’s evening out with being much more active.

Training for the Chicago Marathon starts June 3. I have 2 5-milers and a 10 miler before that.

Between knowing my life is going to be taken over by a training plan and the playoffs killing me (KILLING ME) I’m working to maintain my base but not working out like I normally would. I want to go into this training cycle with a solid endurance base but without fatigue, so I’m scaling back for the next few weeks.

The playoffs are brutal for health and fitness. All the beer, all the crap food, none of the sleep. Trying to balance out with all the water, veggies, and lean protein when there aren’t games but my body feels like a trash can.

YOLO.

I've walked 40 something miles on this vacation in Italy since Friday, I feel like I want to die.

Boy am I out of shape.

Signed up for the Falmouth Road Race the other day. I've only ever done a couple of 5k's but need something to keep me motivated from just drinking and golfing all summer.

Finally had my first true "old guy" feeling at 32. I took a long layoff from working out in my late 20s until last Thanksgiving (used to be a gym rat). Got real fat & out of shape (nearly 200 @ 5' 7"). Down to 170 now & started really weight lifting again about a month ago. Managed to tweak my left forearm/bicep area (hard to pinpoint exactly but that general area, and I can feel it in the curl motion, with pullups or with dumbbell flys). Rested it for 2 weeks. First curl, still hurts.

Reminds me of an old Louis CK joke about hurting his foot in his 40s. "So doc, what are we going to do about it?" "Do about it? You're 40, you just have a bad foot now. "

Guess there is no more heavy lifting in my future.

could just be tendonitis...that crap takes forever to go away.

Heavy lifting doesn't have to end though. I'm getting back from my 3rd shoulder surgery (had my bicep cut off the shoulder and attached to the arm instead), and have had no issues getting back heavy lifting (eventually) each time. Have been back at the weights for about a month, but still in the build up stage. Cant do them back to back days, even splitting up back and chest. So every other, and slowly building the weight up on the bad side. Figuring I'm a year out from getting back the 25lbs I lost from this one.

but fully agree with the Louis CK bit. I'm 34 and cant remember when it started but my knees and lower back love to ache now

I think half of my problem is remembering my glory days and pushing myself up weight a little too quickly. I literally hadn't lifted in 4+ years and went from 20s to 30s in bicep curls pretty quick as I left off doing 50s. I kept form but I think it was too much too soon.

I also do, effectively, negatives on my pull-up down motion and I think that didn't help with it; I can feel it with the down on pull-ups every time so I've cut those out. The problem is I can't replicate that motion in my home gym any other way so I really want to go back to them (I only have dumbbells & a bench, a bike, and a yoga ball/mat, plus the pull up bar). I had designed a series of lifts (6 different ones) that would be great & could be done with my equipment at home but I keep having to drop certain exercises due to the arm and it sucks.

If we were headed into the winter I'd just take a break on lifting for an extended period but we're headed into the summer, I moved back to the shore, and I'm single again for the first time in a long time... it's hard to cut out lifting right now haha.

hahaha, similar boat here. Dont feel quite right walking around down at 210, feel small.

I've gone a little too quick already this time around too. Its tough to make myself grab a 15 or a 20 for the bad side. Also having to alter what was my routing because flat presses are no longer a go. So the new plan is to double the incline reps at a lower weight.

I wonder if you can do chest/back motions where biceps get secondary work without the pain? Like pulldowns or rows

I ran an 8:23 minute mile Tuesday second time out. A couple years ago I pushed myself for distance and got plantar fasciitis once I hit 7 miles a couple times so this time I’m working on speed to start with some hiking and trail running. First goal is a mile in less than 8 minutes.

I hear you. I haven't lifted in I don't remember how long - 5-6 years maybe. Probably that long since I've done specific cardio workouts (at least regularly), though I've been skating as a ref this whole time - it's just not the same. So when I started going to the gym again last week, I tried to take it easy with both Cardio and weights. I'm having to force myself to not push the weights or reps up (or set #s) too fast. I'm 49 now and don't recover at all like I used to. Like last night, after the elliptical, I did crunches and then wasn't feeling it on working weights, so I just called it a night, despite that nagging feeling I should continue. Listening to your body is hard when you're excited to make progress. Good news is, my skating must have kept me in reasonable cardiovascular shape, because I'm already up to 36 minutes on the elliptical.

I am able to; pure chest press or back exercises like bent over rows don't hurt. I can feel something, but it isn't pain and it doesn't get worse. It's gotta be something related to the bicep, or maybe even the forearms. I can do all the triceps exercises I want too with no issue. May just avoid those exercises that hurt it for a while (flys, curls, pullups) and hopefully I can build strength around it/get through the issue.

You know what, I think it might be related to my forearm. Like do a hammer curl motion: that part of your arm/forearm where it meets the elbow is where the pain is. I also started noticing it after I ordered myself one of those squeezer things and, working from home full time with a lot of stress recently, I may have overdone that...

I was in perfect not-shape prior to my restart, I wish I had stayed active with something. I was in a relationship at the time where we both got complacent & I have a WFH/computer related job - sedentary would be an understatement for about 3-4 years.

Back before I decided to actually try (and clean up my diet with it) I tried running. Literally got about 1/4 mile before my shins hurt and I thought I was about to die (was also a near PPD smoker for a few years there, quit that too). Decided to buy myself a bike & focus on that over the winter/early spring. Did my first run 3 weeks ago and got 2 miles at a decent clip before I wanted to die. Marked progress. Plus I didn't look like a plum afterwards.

Third run of the year, 7:51 minute mile. First sub 8 minutes mile run ever I think. I like the split of going for speed twice a week and hiking or jogging on Saturday. Didn’t think I’d get under 8 minutes this quick, 7:30 is next.

I work from home every day and bought a bunch of stuff to do here. I'll be honest, when you don't have to go out for a drive every day, it's hard to drive to a gym. I bike inside on bad days, run on good days (AM; 3/4 days per week), and have weights/core stuff here. I was all dumbbells (other than a few cable exercises) back in the day anyway (hate spotters) so I've made it work. Plus I control the TV so that helps.

Dog is settling down at 4 months so that excuse is nearly over; will get myself back into it June 1. I would say April/May have been spotty with the new pup & the Bs playoffs, but those are pure excuses to slack. Have kept the diet & cardio up, mostly, so I'm still at a good weight, just would like to add a bit of muscle. Not trying to muscle-beach-it at 32, going on 33, with my frame, just want to not be fat when I sit down anymore and don't want to be skinny either.

This story has been making the rounds in fitness circles. Apparently after a number of children actually dying, Belgian doctors are calling for parents who raise their kids vegan to be prosecuted.

"The opinion said it was unethical to subject children to the diet because it didn’t include animal proteins and vital amino acids which can help growth and prevent health problems.

The vegan diet could only be made safe for growing children if complemented with medical supervision, regular blood tests and vitamin supplements, which most parents were not qualified to provide."

Parents who raise children as vegans should be prosecuted, say Belgian doctors

Google the Belgian Minister of Health.

I'm aware of her obesity, but the article stated it was Belgian doctors, not her, making the recommendation.

And there have been reported deaths.

In 2017, in Beveren, Belgium a couple were sentenced to a suspended six month sentence after their seven-month-old baby died of malnutrition and dehydration. The infant’s death was blamed by doctors on the parents’ choice to only feed it vegetable milk.

I don't know the answer. Zdeno Chara has flourished on a vegan diet, but maybe it's not a good idea for kids?

It requires the right balance of foods to get all nutrients needed and/or supplementation. Basically, if you really want to do it, and research it (or have a trainer/nutritionist like an athlete would), you'll be fine. If you just decide to go vegan by only eating fruits & veg, it's probably not going to work out.

That said, I love me some animal products so it isn't for me. I've turned red meat into a every so often treat but I eat some sort of bird almost daily at dinner, yogurt every morning, and bring in fish/pork once or twice a week to change it up (pulled chicken breast or ground turkey is my dinner staple and that gets boring).
