Has any player ever been as wasted as McDavid?

I'm having flashbacks to the "the Avs rebuild is way ahead of the Oilers" talk of 2014.

At least karma didn't hit you guys as hard as the Sens after all that "0 year rebuild" lording.

He's only 21. There's still well over 15 seasons left in him whether they're with Edmonton or elsewhere. Olli Jokinen comes to mind. He had some really good years as a legitimate star player in Florida but never made the playoffs in his 8 years there.

It is way ahead of Edmontons, though.

It will be even further ahead by next season.

More players than we probably think. Edmonton is uniquely terrible because of how long this has been going on, not because of how bad they've been since McDavid came on board. Yzerman's Red Wings were known as the Dead Things, and the gap between him and his teammates was pretty crazy until the late 80s. As mentioned, Sakic's early years. I think it happens to a lot of #1 overall picks, early on, and then the team grows. The problem in Edmonton is there seems to be no path forward, and they have a long history of striving to be nothing more than mediocre.

OEL has wasted his whole career in a complete disaster of a franchise.

Well to be fair, Edmonton are not longer rebuilding, they are redemolishing.

Rick Nash in Columbus. Obviously he's not as good as McDavid (who is), but his teammates were a lot worse.

So you're ready to declare Nurse to be a "great hockey player"??

That's a tiny limb you're going out on there.

28 game sample size?? How about the rest of his games? How does that body of work stack up to being a "great" hockey player?

Nurse is the definition of an average defenseman. Has really good tools, but his brain can't keep up. And that's not just me saying this, a quick glance at HFOil will support this claim coming from a heap of your own posters.

Relative to the rest of the team he's pretty great.

(I thought that post said "good hockey players". I'll concede "great" haha.)

Matthews and Marner come to mind. Thankfully, Marner will be able to escape in a few months.

Good point. Maybe they can find some help in the draft over the next few years. A bunch of top 5 picks will surely make them a contender.

    How could it not?
