I can't see anyone ever scoring 10 points in a game again... as long as the nets and goaltending equipment aren't reduced in size and teams are icing five skaters at even strength anyway.

A ENG is an even-strength goal and a penalty shot goal is counted towards whatever the game-state is at the time of the goal. So, you could technically score an ES, PP, SH, PS and ENG with only three goals.

Lemieux, but I also think it's unlikely that Sittler will score 10 points again.

Depending on the year, there are between 35-75 penalty shots per season on average. You have to have the luck of getting one, AND the luck of that being a night you score 4 other goals. Though a 10 point night is insane, the 5 goals 5 ways is definitely my choice because the odds are so hard against you.

I feel like Mario's "accomplishment" is kind of manufactured. It's a five goal game. The conditions for it happening in those ways rely far too much on luck/chance to be impressive in a way beyond that. It's an answer to a trivia question, not an accomplishment.

Sittler's will always be more impressive to me.

I feel like one day, the bounces will actually go McDavid's way and he'll get 10 points.

If only he didnt have Lucic stapled to his side.

Gretzky didn't get 9 my dude. McDavid ain't gonna get 10.

As for the OP, I'd say that Sittler's 10 points is much harder in the modern NHL. A 5 goal game is almost unheard of (two in the last 20 years), but there just isn't enough scoring for a 10 point game. One player since the 80's has hit 8 (Gagner lol), so I can't see anyone hitting 10.

I still can’t decide so I haven’t voted. Flip flopping over and over lol

I think Lemieux’s was harder to do because it needs luck, talent and particular circumstances.

Then I’m reminded that nobody’s even reached 9 points, let alone 10. And goal scoring just isn’t like it was back in Sittlers time.

This was posted by Aerolanche last year.

"In 1988/89, teams averaged 299.3 total goals for, each. Let's call it 300. Of those goals, 84.3 were on the powerplay, call it 84. 12.2 (so 12) were shorthanded. 8 goals were scored on penalty shots this season, for a total of about 0.4 per team for the season. In 92/93, 136 empty net goals were scored league-wide. It took me longer than 60 seconds to find this stat, so that's as close as we will get to 88/89 for this exercise and we will consider it to be accurate. That means 6.5 empty net goals for per team, which is definitely lower than it is today. Anyway:

300 total goals scored per team

84 power play goals scored per team
0.4 penalty shot goals scored per team
12 shorthanded goals scored per team
6.5 empty net goals scored per team

Adding these up -> 197 even strength goals scored per team

Dividing this by 18 skaters per team per game, and 80 games each:

0.06 power play goals per player per game
0.0003 penalty shot goals per player per game
0.008 short handed goals per player per game
0.005 empty net goals per player per game
0.14 even strength goals per player per game

Thus, the odds of getting all five in the same game:

0.06 x 0.0003 x 0.008 x 0.005 x 0.14 = 0.000000000008, or a 0.0000000008% chance of happening. Converted to a fraction, this is about 1 in 1,250,000,000 for the average Joe. Yeah. Never happening again."

It is just so incredibly rare that it might never happen again. 10 points seems more doable.. eventually.

lol. lucic is the one holding him back from a 10 point night eh? in the last decade there has been only 7 occasions an entire team has scored 10 goals, but somehow you think lucic is the one stopping mcdavid from doing it himself? lol.

you must not think much of draisaitl.

I mean Sam Gagner wasn't that far away from Sittler... Can't imagine anyone ever repeating Lemieux again.
