Ericsson is overpaid and overrated (but I don't know if we should/would let him go), Nyquist will break out and Helm will get an A.
Howard, when on his game, plays like a top 5 goalie. There have been a couple seasons where our playoff berth was based purely on his saving of games.
Blashill maybe a great coach, but Babcock is the best one in the league. It's criminal that this guy hasn't won a Jack Adams with Detroit. He's had success with talented teams, but that doesn't mean it wasn't his doing. Not to mention his management and salvation of injury-riddled seasons.

1. Howard was probably our MVP in two playoff runs, where do your stats show that? You cant just look at a player's status and automatically assume he's bad or good. Corey Crawford is also top 5 in wins, he's dramatically worse than Howard.
2. Ericsson is not overpaid. He improves the PK, helps stabalize 5 on 5 play. Thats all he's paid to do and he does it. There was a stat, as you like to use, that our PK dipped to below 75% while he was out last season.
3. Blashill is a good coach but is half way through his first pro season as a head coach. Let's see what he can do outside of 4 months.
No goalie is a championship goalie until they win it.

2) If Jimmy asks for more then 4.5 million we let him walk. Four year deal for 18million would be fair and would allow him to get another good contract after that if he warrants it.
3) NO. But yes we 100% should buy out Quincey and one fo CC/Sammy/Eaves to free up more money for proper NHL players
4) At some point babs will leave but will be on his timing and his choosing when that is
5) maybe an Assistant one day if he can stay in the lineup
6) maybe in the 2016-2017 season they will, untill then fat chance

Hey thanks for the comments. I was making them bold on purpose to start discussion. GO WINGS!! (and btw I read in the Grand Rapids Press today that there's a good chance Mrasek might get a start for the Wings this weekend, still think he's a year or two away from the NHL, but he's a stud)

Who? Jeff Blashill, current head coach of the Grand Rapids Griffins. He has taken the Griffins from 3 years of misery to 21-11-2-2 and 1st place in the Midwest Division. Before that he took Western Michigan from 8-20-8 to 19-13-10 and an NCAA Tournament appearance. Blashill additionally assisted Mike Babcock in 2011-12. He’s a genius and will assuredly be behind the bench for some lucky NHL team very soon. The Red Wings better make sure that is them. For those saying that the Wings can't get rid of Babcock, consider this, Babcock may have been the result of talent. His Stanley Cup and Gold Medal were both won with teams loaded with studs, the Wings also haven't gone far in the playoffs the past three years and don't looked poised to this year either, maybe he's really not the guy.

The youth reason as was stated by walt, along with excelling in a head coach spot where he has a bit more pull.
I think Renney becoming available was also a bit tempting for Detroit, he took Edmonton's PP from brutal to #1. (Although having Hall, RNH, and Eberle helps)
As 'bold' as these comments are, Blashill becoming our next coach is not that unlikely. Depends on who's available at the time. Now when that finally happens is a better question. Babcock will probably stick around for a while, he has a bit of leeway.
The only thing I'll give you is Howard. I'd go $3.5 mil and not a penny more. Howard, just like any goalie for the Red Wings unless they are named Hasek, has been a beneficiary of a defense that kept shots to the perimeter and rarely sees more that 25 a game. When Howard has been called upon to make saves a Vezina worthy goalie would make routinely, let alone steal games, he's dropped the ball.
Wow, these are all ridiculous, except for Helm earning an A soon.
Babcock won't be replaced by Blashill, Ericsson is putting up decent numbers. Besides, who would we replace him with? We're weak on defense, and they think a cautious Wings management is going to dump one unnecessarily?
And the Howard thing almost doesn't merit a response. He's played well enough for the Wings, and shown some hints of brilliance. He HAS carried the Wings in the past. On top of that, you don't dump a reliable (if only "average") goalie in the current NHL to experiment with a rookie minor leaguer (Mrazek) or a career backup like Gustavsson.
These "unexpected" things should be expected to not happen.

Howard's SV% was low last playoffs when a defensively awful Wings team crapped the bed, and only in a 5 game period. The previous 2 playoff runs he was .915 in 12 games and .923 in 11 games. His total playoff save % is .915, all in front of a team that has been defensively garbage during his time in net, so don't misrepresent him.
Big E is not particularly impressive. However, he's not fodder anymore now. He's a fairly safe, stable player that can eat up a lot of minutes with relatively low impact, and he could still put his skills together a little more. Frankly, he's not around for long enough or enough money to be worth buying out. The contract favors him a little, but its not an impediment on the team.
Babcock has handled a team in a transitory period the last couple years and has still kept the team about .500 and in the playoffs (we'll see this year). He obviously he has the players respect. Blashill may be an eventual replacement, but Babs isn't going anywhere yet.
I don't disagree that Nyquist has potential to be a top scorer, but I'd say you're writing off Datsyuk, Zetterberg, and to a lesser extent Filppula a bit early. I'll be happy if he does lead scoring, as long as it's with a PPG or more.
As for Helm, I'd be happy to see him wearing an A within the next season or two, but I think Flip is ahead of him in line.
Not sure where you came up with the .888 sv% but his actual career playoff numbers are 2.63 gaa and .915 sv%
At least get the stats right before going on a rant about how said player sucks

Helm could be the captain at season 2020-21 (when Zetterberg has retired) or something, at 34 years old.
Have to agree with this. Two years ago I heard that Ken Holland signed him for a horrible contract. Drastical overpayment etc. Doesn't look so horrible.
