If Hamilton isn't interested in re-signing with Carolina...

Trade #1

To Toronto: Hamilton (extended), Reimer

To Carolina: #15, Liljegren, Anderson (extended)

Toronto get a hometown #1 RD

Carolina get a #1 goaltender, a young Dman with some upside, plus the #15 pick in a strong draft

Trade #2

Toronto out: Johnsson, Kerfoot, Reimer
Toronto in: Hogberg

Buffalo out: Mittelstadt, Okposo
Buffalo in: Johnsson, Kerfoot, Anisimov

Ottawa out: Anisimov, Hogberg
Ottawa in: Mittelstadt, Okposo, Reimer

Toronto clear the necessary cap space to sign Pietrangelo

Buffalo get some serviceable forwards to help fill out their roster, while also dumping Okposo's contract. Anisimov's contract expires next summer, so he'll be off the books by the time Dahlin's extension kicks in

Ottawa land a young C with some upside, plus a solid goaltender whose base salary is only 850k for next season who can hopefully be flipped at the deadline. Okposo's salary will help them reach the cap floor for the next few seasons while they're rebuilding, but he'll be off the books by the time this year's draft picks are due for extensions

Assuming Pietrangelo wants to play for the Leafs, their defense next season...

Rielly - Pietrangelo
Muzzin - Hamilton
Sandin/Dermott/Holl

If the Canes trade Hamilton, I doubt it's for a goalie and futures.

I'm pretty sure it would take substantial NHL roster pieces.

When a player gets that close to UFA, it's generally picks and prospects, even with an extension. Acquiring teams are looking to add without subtracting too much from their roster. That's how to do it.

Hamilton needs to be re-signed. A Barrie or a Vatanen is a step backwards for a team that's well positioned to take a step forward at a time in which the elite of the East may be closing in on the end of their windows.

If only it was this easy and cheap to get a 1D

However, Hamilton is not a 1D

Toronto hoses Carolina, then gets hosed themselves. I'm not a big Hamilton fan and don't want to anything to do with his next lucrative contract but that deal is far too good to pass up.

No, I don’t want Okposo and trading Hogberg for Reimer is pointless. Happy?

Is anyone ever happy on the Trade Board?

And of course you don't want Okposo, nobody does... but you take him on in order to add Mittelstadt to your rebuild

The hope with Reimer is that he would have a good first half of the season, and then can be dealt at the deadline to a team in need of a goaltender

You know what I really can’t stand? When someone comes along and proposes a bad trade and they can’t accept that their trade idea is bad, so they have to try to defend it.

I couldn’t care less about Casey Middlestat. If he’s so good, why isn’t he in the nhl? Ottawa has lot of prospects. We don’t need to take on Okposo’s horrible contract to get a guy we don’t even need.

Get this through your head ok? Ottawa will hit the cap floor. They don’t need Kyle Okposo making 6 million for the next three years. Stop acting like your doing Ottawa fans a favour, you’re not.

How much you think Mittelstadt is worth ? Toronto payed a 1st for to get rid of Marleau who had 1 year left, you expect Ottawa to take a 3 year version in Okposo for a faltering prospect ?

Reimer with a good season is maybe worth a conditional 3rd at the TDL.

Ain't no getting rid of Okposo without the 8th, imo no incentive from any team otherwise, doesn't mean you don't get anything back tho.

Okposo + Montour + 8th for Tierney + 28th + 61st/62nd (DAL 2nd)

No chance for Carolina.

Liljegren has little value to the Canes as he would be behind both Bean and Keane. If the Canes are dealing Hamilton it is for a good roster piece. Not a middling upgrade to Mrazek for 1 year.

Andersen for 2021 2nd if Carolina strikes out on better options or UFA.
