Saw the Budaj signing coming. Good backup for the 'Price'.

No to Ryder. He is 33 years old and this will probably be the last contract of his career and he will be looking to get 4 year deal. Will be too rich for the habs both contract $ and length.

According to capgeek, we have under 4M left to spend. If Kaberle they buyout Kaberle we would have 8M to spend for 2-3 forward.

Barring trades, and leaving some wiggle room, I have it as ~8mil to spend on 1 forward, 1 dman and 1 more of either...

Bourque ($3.333m) / Plekanec ($5.000m) / Gionta ($5.000m)
Pacioretty ($4.500m) / Desharnais ($3.500m) / Gallagher ($0.870m)
Galchenyuk ($3.225m) / Eller ($1.325m) / ???
Prust ($2.500m) / White ($0.722m) / Moen ($1.850m)
Dumont ($0.578m)

Josh Gorges ($3.900m) / P.K. Subban ($2.875m)
Andrei Markov ($5.750m) / Alexei Emelin ($2.000m)
??? / Raphael Diaz ($1.225m)
Francis Bouillon ($1.500m) / ???

Carey Price ($6.500m)
Peter Budaj ($1.400m)

Buyout: Tomas Kaberle ($0.000m)

Love him. Your ideal #2 goalie who just takes what he is given and who won't make your team lose too often.

Let's:

Trade Gionta to NJ for a 2nd
Re-sign Ryder to a 3 years, 5M/per deal
Sign David Clarkson to a 4 years, 4.5M/per deal.
Sign some depth, big d-man à la Mark Fistric to a 1 year, 1.5M/per deal

Pacioretty - Galchenyuk - Gallagher
Bourque - Plekanec - Ryder
Desharnais - Eller - Clarkson
Moen - Dumont - Prust

Markov - Emelin
Gorges - Subban
Bouillon/Fistric - Diaz

Price
Budaj

Defense still not ideal, but at some point either Beaulieu or Tinordi I expect will be ready to play solid minutes and omrpove it.
Clarkson at 4.5M/year is the highest I'd go for him. If you can't get him, go after Clowe for cheaper. If you still can't sign this guy, try and get a decent sized winger who can play with some physicality.

If you sign clarkson to a contract at 4.5 million for any term, you're making a big mistake. Just read up on what some of the Jersey fans have to say about him.

It depends in which context. The salary cap ain't going to go down anytime soon after next summer, and NJ's still a team which is pretty damn hard to read as far as offensive potential of the players is concerned. Kovalchuk's stats took a serious dive ever since he got there. They also have absolutely no offense whatsoever from their backend.

Love this guy's attitude, such a team player:

Canadiens Montréal ‏@CanadiensMTL 2m

It's Carey's team right now; I have his back. - Peter Budaj

My guess is 1.4 M per year

Go away, future man!

At the start I would have been happy to see him leave and have Tokarski up. However, I didn't give him a fair chance considering the team played like **** in front of him due to the games being back-to-back.

Also, 24CH opens your eyes and makes it harder to hate some players.

One shall not sign Ryder for a three year contract especially at 5M$ per. He's already so slow he's just going to get slower with age. To me it's either

1yr/4.5M$ per
or 2yrs 4.00M$ per (I'm already very hesitant to give him such a deal)

We've got prospects who can do his job much better than him with Hudon, Collberg and Kristo. Sure they'll need time to get similar pts production as good as Ryder's (maybe not for Kristo), but after what we've just experienced with Erik Cole I don't see why we should be repeating the same mistake

I have zero problems with this. He's a character guy, a solid back up and knows his role. This is something rare to get from a backup.

Bergevin :handclap:

Great to see Gainey's "no contract negotiation during season" policy off the table.

This stability is unsettling.

Great signing. I am sure we will see great contributions from PB this year and for 2 more.
