Either your math is terrible or you don’t know how buyouts work. It’s $2mm for four years. Plus we get relief in 2022 and 2023 vs what would have been his $6mm AAV.

4 years then.

Landeskog needs a new contract, can't see him signing anywhere under what Raantanen is gettong, so 9.5 + considering UFA years
Then after, you Have Makar (7), Mackinon (11), Byram all needing new deals before EJ's buyout is off the books.

Oh and Flat cap during that era.

And you need to ice a 20man roster too. I get why Avs ar trying to trade Graves salary to every fan base considering he's overpaid for a bototm pairing D, but everyone sees how Avs cap crunh will hurt them in a very near future... No one is taking Graves and giving you a 2nd rd pick for him, Let alone adding a prospect.

Avs will lose Graves to expansion draft.

The contract they’ll need to figure out how to move in the off season is JT Comphers. He’s got 2 years left at $3.5mm. They have cap space to bridge Makar at $5mm. Their players have always taken discounts to market. Nice thing about being a contender in a great city in a state with low taxes.

buyout of EJ frees up $4mm over the next two seasons. That’s helpful cap space to have. EJs $2mm in 2024 won’t be so bad. Cap should be going back up by then.

Avs are lucky to resign several big guys after C19. The market has been reset. Toronto must be so annoyed given they resigned all their big 4 at just the wrong time.

We shall see. No way he waves in order to go to a bottom feeder team, no reason too. He'll make more money forcing the Avs to buy him out and gettinf another contract.

So either they go 4-4, and lose Kadri, or go 7-3 and lose Toews if they decide no to buy out EJ.

It'll be fun to watch

What are you talking about? He wouldn't be getting traded.

If Sakic buys him out.

And again, I don,t see graves being the pick when SA can pick a younger player like Jost or a better player in general than an overpaid 3rd pairing D. Unless Sakic sends a 2nd rd pick to SEA for them to take on Graves and his contract!

Francis will go for younger / cost controlled assets vs overpaid bototm pairing Ds

Oh I just thought with Newhook coming in they'd rather lose Kadri's contracr vs Donskoi
Nah, not at all. They’re welcome to him. Donskoi’s playing well right now. Also an incredibly streaky player at a less valuable position. Would also clear up $4 million for the next couple years. Seattle can have their pick of him, Burakovsky, Jost, Nuke, or Graves. The Avs can take the hit at the positions they play.

This whole conversation feels kinda pointless. At the end of the day, the only important part here is preserving the core, and the Avs can do that + protect EJ if they have to.

Anyways, what was this thread about again?

Jost will be protected. So will Burakovsky.

Will be Graves or Donskoi we lose. Avs will be lucky if they take Donskoi. Graves is a high end 3rd pair on a great team like the Avs but he’d be top 4 on weaker teams like the Habs. He’s also our top PK guy on the leagues 2nd best PK. He’ll be picked by Seattle.

He,s not better than any of our LHD man, so how would he be a top4d?

Weber-Petry-Edmundson-Romanov-Chiarot are all better than him.

And why would Seattle select him?

Wanna make a bet? I guarantee he will waive.

Why would he tho? No reason too.

He waives = zero chance to win a cup

Sakic buys him out = ful salary + possibility to get another 2-3M$ a year contract from another team in the Off season

He has NO reason to waive whatsoever

He waives, he stays in Denver. He doesn't waive, he gets bought out.

Agreeing to waive is the ONLY way he has a chance to win a cup.

We'll see! Don't see it happening, again why take the risk? Sakic could then pay SEA a 1st and couple of prospect to take his contract too you know

Obviously you don't have a f***ing clue who Joe Sakic is and this conversation shows that.

It's a business buddy. Doesn't matter who Joe Sakic is, He wants to ice the best team possible, and keeping EJ around isn't the way

Why are we trading the better / younger d-man tho?

Younger /= better. Heading into a playoff race Montour > Mete at this point & he's on an expiring contract which eliminates the need to protect him from SEA.

Plus Mete's not seeing the ice & has already requested a trade...

EJ is waiving his NMC or getting bought out. Thanks for coming out though.
You may be right, but Ducks fans said this about Bieksa (who had an NMC) in the last expansion draft. Ducks actually ended up protecting Bieksa, and had to trade a player to get Vegas to not select Vatanen or Manson. I'm guessing it's because ownership was unwilling to buyout Bieksa.

The player they traded was a dude by the name of Shea Theodore.

Isn't Makar exempt, anyways?

AVs will definitely protect the cheaper Jost @ $900K. It would leave the best options of: Graves, Donskoi or Compher. Each player earns $3M+ to open more cap space. SEA is likely choosing between Graves or Donskoi.

Quality DMan is harder to obtain than Winger, it's likely Graves is the selection and the reason for the availability. AVs have a Top 3 overall defensive team and Graves playing 20+ mins a game is extremely valuable and would be a Top 4 on the Habs. Doubt the trade offer would be any lower than for picks after the draft.
