To Habs: RNH

To Edm: Pleks, Juulsen, 2018 1st

IMO this trade works for both sides. MTL gets a top six centre they need, and not at the cost of Sergachev. Edm gets a 3rd line shutdown centre to help mentor their young players and help with a playoff run, plus a solid RHD prospect and a late first round pick in a 2018 draft that could be a little deeper than 2017. Thoughts?

In fall of 2018 there is a very good chance that the Oilers have no one from this deal playing for the team. Given that the Oilers are not rebuilding this trade does not make a lot of sense for them.

I agree they are moving past their rebuild phase, but considering they are still a very young team it's not as if they have a two year window to contend. There is also the fact they'll have signed Leon and McDavid to long term contracts by then. Would they really need a 6mil 3c in 2018?

Of course not, they will need cap relief soon...

There will come a time RNH may have to be moved but not now and not for odds and ends. Plus Oilers will be removing Ference this year, Fayne next and Pouliot over the next year or two which will open up extra cap.

Doesn't work.
The biggest issue with dealing Plekanec is to get cap relief to spend on a 2C.
Pouliot is $4M per for 2 more years, plus the $1M retained, means we only save $1M on Plekanecs $6M cap hit.
This does nothing for Montreal.

Something around RNH for Gallager? Pouliot and Plekanec could be added to balance cap.

They have two $6M players who may not be with them at the end of their deals. If they move one then they will have plenty of cap space to manage the current roster and depending on the cap they might be ok even if they keep both because their to two defensemen come in at just over $8M combined, they have Puljujarvi on his ELC until Eberle's deal expires, and they finally have cheap depth that is home grown.

Assuming that one of the two $6M guys gets moved keeping RNH gives them the more roster flexibility. Firstly, they have Puljujarvi as a natural replacement on the RW. Secondly, having Nuge allows the Oilers to play Draisaitl with McDavid if they choose to do so. Those two together are deadly and present teams with a nightmare to defend even at this age.

That said, if they move RNH why does so for a return where the main value as far as on ice is a 34 year old center with one year left on a $6M deal. You stated that the Oilers window is not 2 years, so why put much value in Plekanec if you are the Oilers.

I'm not crazy about RNH but I would not oppose to him in MTL. I just don't see Edmonton and montreal as good trading partners for him though.

Pleks makes the same amount as RNH and is 11 years older.

Juulsen really doesn't help us now and we have a RHD prospect in Bear who was selected in the 5th round of the same draft as Juulsen and is vastly outperforming him in the same league and is more suited to the Oilers needs.

Late 1st really doesn't do anything for the Oilers.

RNH is having a down year but the team doesn't need to move him for cap reasons so unless they are getting a fair value deal that makes the team better now they really have no reason to move him.

The sad reality we are living in is one where Edmonton might not get something that it really needs for Hopkins.

So we're getting an older 3rd line C who is probably going to do his job slightly better than Hopkins for a shorter period of time, a draft pick and a prospect.

I've honestly got no problems with this trade.

We desperately need to get Hopkins Eberle and Pouliot off of the team and there's nothing wrong with doing it this way. Got a solid replacement for Hopkins along with more treats to stock our prospect poo, which isn't looking very deep at the moment.
