The asterisk looks a little off as making conference finals bump the pick down as well.

Subject to the results of the NHL Draft Lottery (discussed below), the teams pick in the same order each round, with each team getting one pick per round. The basic order of the picks is determined as follows:[7]
  1. The teams that did not qualify for the playoffs the previous season (picks 1–15)
  2. The teams that made the playoffs in the previous season but did not win either their division in the regular season or play in the Conference Finals (picks 16–23 up to 27) = We need Columbus to be in this group
  3. The teams that won their divisions in the previous season but did not play in the Conference Finals (potentially picks 24–27) = Tampa & potentially Calgary, Nashville, Washington
  4. The teams that lose in Conference Finals (picks 28 and 29)
  5. The team that was the runner-up in the Stanley Cup Finals (pick 30)
  6. The team that won the Stanley Cup in the previous season (pick 31)
The pick can improve if Dallas, Colorado, Vegas makes the Conference Finals

Columbus is a really good team. But so are the Leafs and Bruins. It will be an interesting 2nd round.

Small update on the OP. With Winnipeg eliminated, the Jets' 7th Round Pick Habs picked up in the Armia trade is pick #208.

We will only determine the Winnipeg pick # once the second round is over, if Dallas,Colorado,Columbus, St. Louis, or Carolina advance to the 3rd round, the Winnipeg pick moves up.

How it moves up?

How it moves up?

The final 4 teams in the Stanley Cups playoffs will pick #31,#30,#29,#28 no matter how many points they had in the regular season. So if a team that had fewer points than the Jets during the regular season advances to the final 4, the Jets will move up a spot. So we can only determine where the Jets pick once the 2nd round is over.

I don't think the Habs can hit a home run with the 15th pick. However, they might stumble upon a worthwhile prospect. Their best chance of making the 2020 playoffs would be to trade for a quality left defenseman who has years of shelf-life ahead of him. At least they seem to have filled their crater at C with Domi, Danault, Poehling (and perhaps Suzuki).

Kovalev was picked with the 15th pick.

We have CBJ's 2nd rounder. CBJ is the last seed in the East. Only Dallas and Colorado had less points than the Jackets.

  • If CBJ, Dallas and Colorado lose, CBJ picks 18th in the first and 49th in the 2nd (our pick).
  • If CBJ lose and one of Dallas or Colorado wins this serie, CBJ would pick 17th and 48th (our pick).
  • If CBJ lose and both teams win this serie, CBJ picks 16th and 47th (our pick).
  • ...

So, if the above holds true, the Habs's CBJ pick in the 2nd round can be the 47th, 48th or 49th.

Actually, I was off one pick. Should be either 48th, 49th or 50th. Forgot about Vegas. My bad.

I was rooting for the BJs but they looked pretty bad the last few times I watched, so with their demise I will celebrate 3 top 50 picks for the Habs!
