The big bombshell making news around college hockey today.

Denver head coach George Gwozdecky has resigned effective immediately. You can read more about it HERE.

Gwozdecky steps down after 19 years behind the Pioneers bench. He guided Denver to back-to-back National Championships in 2004 and 2005. The Pioneers season ended on Friday after falling to New Hampshire in the Northeast Regional semi-final of the NCAA Tournament.

Mike Chambers of the Denver Post says he didn't resign, that he was fired for lack of NCAA success. Sucks for him, but he won't be out of a job long.

That's rough, Gordy is a hell of a coach and he sure does bring in high end talent. I know DU has had some 1st round flops lately but this year shouldn't the one that brings down the ax. This team was nothing special and it speaks well of his abilities that they performed as well as they did.

You can come home to your alma mater, Gord, and form a super staff of coaches.

Sounds like Duluth is where he may go now. He is from East Grand Forks so I would think UND would be on his radar but it doesn't sound like it.

He was looking for a school that would have room for him this upcoming season so UMD is not a surprise.
