You need to be an absolute ignoramus to blame Messi. His horrible coach set up his team in a way that played directly into our benefit, Messi is asked to both score and set up people, he has to go get the ball from his CBs, he has a over the hill Masch as the main creator in the midfield, he had Broz glued to him, he played against what is a top 5 midfield in the world and the only guy who played up to his ability on his team was Tagliafico. If you think Messi is the problem there you should switch to watching something like golf.

With that being said, I do not like how he just ran from the pitch and how he reacted towards Strinic, even though I have the urge to throw things at my TV every time Strinic touches the ball.

But saying his teammates don't respect him (when he is obviously the one the whole nation looks to) or that he's at fault for not "quarterbacking" them is off point.

It doesn't look like they respect him. This isn't really worth going into and arguing over, as we should just be enjoying this World Cup. Maybe after it's all over and we need something to fill in the 4 year wait with, we can argue about this.

You need Dybala at the CAM position no question asked with Messi playing on the right side.

This coach is a f***ing idiot. Either he's playing favoritism or he's an absolute donkey.

Same coach who took worse Chile team to win Copa America and a great stint at Sevilla just prior to joining Argentina?

The problem is on the players and AFA mainly - too many fragile egos. I speculate that there are some cliques involved in the squad.

There are certainly some questionable coaching decisions, but if the squad are holding meetings and demanding a coach be sacked? They are the main problem.

That Chile team wasn't worse than the current Argentina NT.

Reporter: "Coach Sampaoli said the players didn't execute the game plan properly"
Aguero: "He can say what he wants"

Yeah, Sampaoli has enough success under his belt to show that he isn't an idiot or terrible coach. But the deal with national team coaches is that they always get a lot of scrutiny. And Argentina is a particularly bad case. Argentina has had 8 national team coaches since 2004, 25 since Stabile's 20 year run ended in 1958. A coach who lasts past one 2 year cycle is the rare exception. It's a revolving door. And every time they wonder why they haven't won it all with a generation of players that never developed a great goalkeeper, defender or passing midfielder.

Sampaoli does exacerbate the issues in midfield. Pérez and Mascherano in central midfield is a joke when neither can pass. Banega and Lo Celso, who both offer better passing, more impetus and have both performed well for Argentina recently, are left on the bench?

Then the fact that if there is an open revolt against him after 2 games it shows how much the players buy into what he is preaching.

The attitude of the players (& AFA) is going to continue to weigh the national team down, but
Sampaoli is a big part of the problem here as well.

A lot of crap on Twitter. Don’t believe anything being said.

There is certainly a drift between the players and the coach because no body can understand what was going on in Sampaoli’s mind when he chose this crappy formation and crappy players.

The only quotes 100% correct are Sampaoli quote blaming himself for the loss and Aguero’s quite saying (about Sampaoli) he can say whatever he wants.

Prepare for Argentia's decline to be even worse.

After World Cup 2002 many thought Argentina will decline hard.
A new generation came and the older was quickly forgotten.

The difference here though is that this team is the worst since more than 40 years. The new generation of players it's unclear yet if they're going to have the same impact as the previous one. Argentina can't seem to develop good players other than attackers. And many of them are taking weird career decisions like going to Russia, China or the MLS. Argentina could be in for a real decline.

Bielsa is a radical version of Sampa. He doesn't adapt, it's his way or the high way. Can't even begin to imagine the disaster the current crop of slow as balls argentinean midfielders trying to implement Bielsa style press-press-press football.

I think he meant for after the World Cup after half the squad is retired.
He may be the ideal candidate to coach the young players, but I think Bielsa is past it.

The thing is, this isn't the first time in recent history we've seen an Argentinian manager struggle with putting a working team on the pitch. There's simply always going to be the question of how to build a team that gets beyond the lack of balance in the squad (and talent pool). And while there's no shortage of ideas presented in the media etc., talk is as per usual cheap.

IMO the players turn on Sampaoli because they know he's the weakest link here. If the national team manager is rarely around very long, while the same players might be on the national team for 10 years, it's pretty convenient to point fingers at the coach. Of course, the irony here is that Argentina can still qualify for the 2nd round and yet here you have players revolting and fans trying to assault the coach. In most other countries they at least wait for elimination before the inquest starts, here we wonder how Sampaoli can even coach the next match.

I meant with Maradona as coach.
But as long as they don't stay there for long, there is not a lot wrong with going to these clubs. They might get more time to play until they are mature enough to join the big leagues. Perhaps they earn more as well in Russia or China than in a middle of the pack club in, say, Germany.
