Does this have anything to do with him possibly joining the wings ever? Not sure how these things totally work?

When he signed with GRG, he was really signing with Ryan Martin of the Wings.

Ryan Martin is the Assistant GM for the Red Wings, but is main role is the Griffins GM. He main task is to fill in the Griffins roster after the Red Wings assign their players here in GR. Usually that covers about 12-15 players depending on their agreement with each other. Ryan then has to fill the rest of the Griffins roster with players (juniors/college/Europe) that are not signed or drafted by any NHL team that might not have the tools to make it in the NHL, but that player might have a big impact as an AHL player.

Current Griffins players like Colin Campbell, Matthew Ford, Carter Camper, Dominik Shine, Derek Hulak, plus you have your 2-way (AHL-ECHL) contracts [Brian Moore, Jordan Topping, Trevor Hamilton, Marcus Crawford, & Pat Nagle], and recent additions for next season and beyond {Troy Loggins, Gregor MacLeod, Alec McCrea, and Jarid Lukosevicius} have nothing to do with the Red Wings at all. Any NHL team can sign any of these players that the Griffins have signed if they want to (including the Red Wings). That is why if you go to an AHL game (whether it is in GR or any other AHL city), NHL scouts are not only scouting their AHL team, but occasionally scouting these types of players from other AHL teams (more so around TDL and around Calder Cup playoffs) to see if one of those players could make an impact enough to help their NHL team and get them for their roster for next season.

Kyle Crisicolo was signed by the Griffins (AHL only contract) the season the Griffins won their last Calder Cup and by the time that the Calder Cup playoffs were going on, nearly half the NHL teams were impressed by his play that they all wanted a chance to sign him to a NHL contract for the following season and Buffalo ended up signing him. Turner Elson was also on an AHL only contract at the start of the season, until the Red Wings were impressed with his play this season that they signed him to a 2 yr deal NHL contract.
