I'm torn between Oates, Thornton, and Jagr. Each of them led the NHL in assists 3 times.

Add Gordie Howe who is also a 3-time assist leader.

you dont have Forsberg in there? 5th alltime in A/GP playing all his career in the DPE (around 5.0-5.4 GPG), and many of his latter seasons playing on one foot

The guy averaged 74A per 82GP over 708 career GP (107A in 151GP in the playoffs).... imagine what he'd do in the 7.5-8.0 GPG era of the 80s and early 90s.

7.7/5.2 x 74 = 109 A/ 82GP

Forsberg was more of a destroyer of worlds than a playmaker. Oates was like a centrocampista in soccer. As pure playmaker as it gets.

Yes. It would be nice to compare Oates and Forsberg using era adjusted stats.

Indeed, one big difference is Oates has played 600 more games... Many games in high scoring, and some post 1996. So his A/GP dips because of longevity, much like Thornton and Jagr.

People need to look at era adjusted assists.

Oates’ numbers are inflated by playing in a high scoring era.

Jagr, Francis, Thornton, Crosby and Forsberg’s numbers are much more impressive than Oates when adjusted for era.

Yeah, Forsberg was excellent.

I put more weight on longevity and total career value than some folks, and Forsberg has a large weakness on his resume in this regard.

Not really, Oates was still putting up 55-70 assists per 82gp after 95-96 at age 34-39
