Bruce McNall to the right of Gretzky, looking strangely dispassionate...

The Panther, Good catch with McNall. I thought it might be him, but wasn't 100% sure.

Notice the crest, a very similar one was worn by NY Rangers almost 50 years later

Man, she's fine! I wouldn't mind taking Miss Hockey for a few intense laps around the rink...

Not that it matters, but the date is at least a year off. The Kings first wore the silver & blacks in October 1988, so this'll be 1988-89 or 1989-90.

You are correct. Hawerchuk is wearing the redesigned "Goals for Kids" patch. I think it's from a game in December 1988.
I appreciate it when things like this gets corrected. It's not easy to date the photos, as most of them are undated. I usually stay away from dating them unless I'm pretty sure of the exact date. In this case I concentrated on the Jets uniform and missed that the "Goals for Kids" patch was redesigned in 1988/89.

PS: I have posted more than 2,500 photos in these photo threads, so one have to dig deep for good photos now. :DD

Saw this in a book I just started reading, and felt it was appropriate (sorry for the quality):

lBgpgPw.jpg
Harold Snepsts, one of the last helmetless players in NHL history, sporting not just a helmet but a visor as well during an early-1980s game.
I recall reading somewhere it was to temporarily protect some sort of injury. Harold did not like wearing the headgear as he said that the perspiration and movement from it caused him to have a rash.

I think the photo is from December 1982 when Snepsts wore the helmet and faceshield for a few games.

Edit: Vancouver Sun, December 10, 1982 - At least Harold Snepsts has a couple of legitimate excuses. His eye still looks like it belongs on Tex Cobb's face. He's wearing a helmet for the first time in his career, and the attached protective plastic shield might just as well be a blindfold. And he's breaking in new skates, wallowing like a kid testing a pond for the first time. These first two games back for the big, likeable defenceman have been horror shows. Snepsts described himself as "clumsy and awkward" after Thursday night's 9-6 spanking by Minnesota North Stars. He was also describing his teammates, and they had no excuse for being duped into a shootout against a team which at home rivals the explo-siveness of Edmonton and Quebec...

A fun detail — on the right side of the first picture, you can see Red Horner just starting to lunge toward Shore (off camera). He knocked Shore out cold, hitting his head on the ice so badly that in the moment it wasn’t completely clear whether both Shore and Bailey might need doctors.

The second picture, taken just a moment later, gives us a sense that the teams are in the process of rushing back to Bailey after going to break up Horner and Shore. The before-and-after has an almost artistic effect... we’ve all seen enough hockey brawls to fill in the gaps.

Which one is Horner going back to see Bailey in the 2nd pic? Number 5?

Incredible! One of the greatest pieces of hockey photography i've ever seen:

1952 – Youngsters playing spirited hockey at the South Inch Pond in Scotland.

(Bears repeating. Shouldn't get lost in a sea of merely "good" pics.)

100% agreed, absolutely beautiful picture. It leaves so much to the imagination too: what's that kid in the middle doing? Was he the puck carrier and did he get sandwiched between those two guys? Is this a free-for-all where every player is going for the puck? What's that shoe doing there??

Just an absolutely gorgeous shot too with the framing, the spectators, the foggy background and the ultra crisp ice... This is a complete gem.

Some people from NHL wanted, that the first game of season 20/21 should be played exactly there.
Gawd... for years and years i have dreamed of an NHL game broadcast without an audience in Alaska or the Rocky Mountains (thought of Banff, as I have been there three times, lived a mere 8 hours west of it).

An NHL game played on an actual pond/lake surrounded by mountains, the infrastructure being simply real benches off the ice plus camera equipment plus all regular on-ice gear.

Gawwwd. COVID19 gave the world a news highlight moment.

I truly believe, in a pre-Internet world of high ratings for network tv and non-fragmented viewership, a virus-motivated no-attendance game at New Year's would have motivated producers to pick the most awesome scene imaginable, it being frozen ice against a mountain backdrop, no stadium.

Despite the claim in the tweet:

I believe that this is a photo of Marc D'Amour with the Colorado Flames (who shared logos with the parent club at the time). But I can't find any photos that match the rather unique helmet being used.

Any ideas? I've added several photos of both Vernon and D'Amour in various parts of the Twitter thread.

What the heck is that helmet? Was that commercially produced, or some FrankenHelmet made in a mad goalie's basement?

Hockey match in Bakuriani, Georgia (then part of the Soviet Union) in 1960 or 1961. The captions says (in Georgian) "Skating in Bakuriani".

Likewise:
XK2ZUPO.jpg

"The first generation of Georgian hockey players, shot in 1960".

Both are via the Georgian hockey federation's Facebook page; they put up a bunch of photos a few years back. The Soviets tried to introduce hockey to the semi-tropical Georgia in the 1960s (it didn't really take), but by the end of the decade it was pretty much over.

Lastly:
niP7QFO.jpg

Kote Bakhutashvili (left) and Tretiak (centre-right), plus the two men who tried to revive Georgian hockey in the 1980s, from 1983. Bakhutashvili (b. 1983) played in the CSKA system, and played part of a match in 1988-89 (plus 2 games in 1991-92 with Kazan). His one game with CSKA came at the end of the season when he played 9 minutes against Sokol. He had also been asked to change his name to be less "exotic" but refused; I don't think it's a coincidence his time with CSKA ended shortly after.

The sport still didn't work, in part because the one arena in the country was torn down after the USSR ended (it's since been replaced with a smaller one, and plans to build more).

You have to wonder if the lake could cope with all the TV equipment and staff. It'd be a shame if melted or broke and both teams drowned.

Typically, how thick is that ice anyway?

Would the shoe possibly be one of the goalposts ? A lot of the time we would use them for posts back 50 years ago when playing pond hockey . As a rule somebody would always get mad and bang....there goes one boot slapped into the fir trees 30 feet away ....
