GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Grand Rapids Griffins on Sunday announced that center Trevor Yates has been released from his amateur tryout and that goaltender Matej Machovsky will be returning to the Czech Republic for the remainder of the season.

Signed to a contract for the 2018-19 campaign and to an amateur tryout for this season on March 29, Yates skated in his professional debut with the Griffins on Wednesday at Texas. He appeared in a total of two games with Grand Rapids and picked up his first pro point on an assist in Thursday’s 6-2 win at San Antonio.

Yates, 23, appeared in 33 games with the Cornell Big Red (ECAC) this season as an alternate captain and posted career highs in points (26), goals (13), assists (13) and plus-minus rating (+17) to cap off a four-year career. He tied for the team lead in both points and goals, helping the Big Red capture the Cleary Cup as the ECAC’s regular season champion and earn a second consecutive bid to the NCAA Tournament.

A native of Beaconsfield, Quebec, Yates appeared in 120 career games with Cornell from 2014-18, producing 65 points (32-33—65), 30 penalty minutes and a plus-20 rating.

In his first pro season in North America, Machovsky, 24, showed a 1-1-1 record, a 2.43 goals against average and a 0.911 save percentage in four games with the Griffins. He made his AHL debut on Feb. 21 against Chicago and stopped 14-of-15 shots in a relief effort. Machovsky picked up his first career AHL victory in his first start on Feb. 25 versus Iowa, recording 26 saves and turning aside all three of the Wild’s shootout attempts.

Machovksy produced an 11-9-1 record with two shutouts in 21 games with the ECHL’s Toledo Walleye this season. If he had enough minutes to qualify, he would have tied for second in the league in GAA (2.02) and ranked fourth in save percentage (0.928).

A native of Opava, Czech Republic, Machovsky played the last four seasons with Plzen HC of the Czech Extraliga. Appearing in 178 games from 2013-17, the 6-foot-2, 200-pound netminder amassed a 94-84-0 record and a 2.23 GAA.

Second-seeded Grand Rapids will face third-seeded Manitoba in the best-of-five Central Division Semifinals. Game 1 is set for Saturday, April 21 at Manitoba.

He just doesn't skate well enough. I like him, he is a heavy body and he is a really good AHL player. But it is his skating that has kept him out of the NHL.

x2.

Even with the 8 year age gap, Ericsson is a much better skater and can still be semi-competent in a spot in the top 4.

him and Dylan McIlrath. I wonder about Dylan . Can he replace Ericson ?

IMO, if McIlrath has any future in the NHL it would be in a role similar to the one that Luke Witkowski filled this past season. A spare dman that can maybe play wing on the 4th line in a pinch and act as a part time enforcer. Then again, one of the driving factors in Witkowski holding that role is his ability to skate better than the average player of his ilk, while McIlrath is on the opposite side of the skating spectrum.

I'm assuming that in Machovsky's case this means that he won't be back next season?

I figured that with Coreau and McCollum heading into unrestricted free agency and all the prospect goalies at least a year away, Machovsky would be penciled in for the #2 spot in GR for next season. However I would imagine a guy about to turn 25 with 4 seasons as a starter in his home lands top league under his belt, can do much better from a financial standpoint than earning the AHL salary on a 2-way deal in the NHL.

Most likely not. He even contacted the Walleye coach a week before their season ended not to put him on their playoff roster as he wanted to stay in Grand Rapids for our playoff run. But with Coreau clearing waivers and back with the Griffins, he was the odd man out and he must have felt that he was not going to get any action both in GR and in Toledo, so they sent him back to the Czech Republic.

Tom McCollum is the million dollar answer to today's big question in this afternoon's opening game of the Calder Cup Playoffs as he will get the start in goal for Game 1 in Winnipeg vs the Manitoba Moose.

He's not an AHL player anymore. There's no reason for him to go back. They didn't make Larkin go to GR once he made the NHL. Same with Mantha.

I mean, what is location, really
finally, he does something. how does he look overall?
He looks okay. He's playing on a lower line with Holmstrom, I believe. He just hasn't gotten a lot of icetime, like 3rd line and 2nd PP. I don't think Hronek has, either. He plays on the #1 PP and not very much at ES. Which I really don't get, because I think Hronek has looked good at both ends.

McCollum in goal for the Griffins tonight. No surprise there. With Holmstrom out for the rest of this series, and Campbell suspended for tonight's game, Mike Borkowski will get his first playoff action as well as Dennis Cholowski will also be inserted in tonight's lineup. Griffins are forced to play 11 forwards and 7 d-men tonight with the happenings from Game 2. Would not be surprised is Joe Hicketts will spend some time playing 4th wing at some point during tonight's game.
