i think he had like 1 or 2. but certainly not enough for the gordie howe hattrick to make any sense

People say that but I've read before that back then, a lot of fight majors weren't handed out like they are now. Players might be in a brawl and pair off but only the players starting the fight got them or players got roughing calls.

So based on fighting majors he only had a couple, but he likely at least had a few more from fighting majors that werent called where he still fought someone. I dont know if thats true, I wasnt around to say for sure. But even if it isnt true, there isnt a player that combined fighting ability with actual hockey ability like gordie did so the name still fits.

A Shanahan hatrick just doesnt sound the same

Don't you mean 'Rick Tocchet Hat-trick'? ;) (Or Stan Mikita Hat-trick... depending on if you believe the totals attributed to him... which seem a bit dubious.)

Most places say Shanahan had more than Tocchet. But the Mikita numbers are exactly my point, most places said he had 3 but then 22 was come up with as well. The box scores from back when Mikita and Howe played are just unreliable and I bet each had more than 2 or 3 (although 22 seems unlikely).

Interesting might be the biggest tribute to hockey in a while...cant think of anything bigger

Some interesting facts...

The bridge will feature a total of six lanes, associated border inspection plazas, and direct connections to Highway 401 in Ontario and Interstate 75 in Michigan, a major trade route in North America. The two highways combine to stretch from Quebec to Florida.

Canada and the U.S. have the largest bilateral trading relationship in the world, with two-way trade in goods and services of nearly $870 billion in 2014. Almost $2.4 billion of goods and services cross the Canada-U.S. border every day

The Ambassador Bridge, currently one of three international crossings connecting Windsor-Detroit, is the busiest land border crossing in North America.

keep in mind they wanted to rename the champlain bridge in montreal after rocket richard last year (or was it two years ago?).

A whole lot easier to do on a new bridge though.

I think Shanahan had the most regular season ones:

alright so being from teh windsor area calling the bridge the Gordie Howe International Bridge is a mouthful.

what's a good nickname the bridge should be refered to as?

Is "I'm taking the gordie?" good enough?

Yeah I'm from the area as well and was thinking the same thing.

"Hey, you gonna take the tunnel bus over for the game?"

"No, I think I'm just gonna hop on the Gordie"

There was a proposal in Montreal to name the new Champlain bridge the "Maurice Richard bridge". Nobody wanted to give such an iconic name to a bridge for whatever reason, everybody complained in social media. I think people from Quebec felt it was to please the crowd and make them forget how expansive this bridge will be.

I posted this on the wings board but thought other peoplemight find it cool. Theyre naming the new Windsor-Detroit bridge after Mr. Hockey. A legendary athlete nicknamed after Canada's sport and oneof, if not the greatest athlete Detroit (and even the USA) has ever seen.

I think its pretty cool that theyre naming it after him :handclap:

Sorry, but I think it's a stupid name for an international crossing. I love hockey, and get the honour for Mr Hockey, but I personally just don't think it's appropriate. There is so much history between these two cities (Windsor and Detroit) - automotive, underground railroad, Detroit River, one of those would have better reflected the collaborative nature of this venture. However, for all those here who are from this area, I think a better name would have been the "Screw You Moroun" bridge.

Its sounds a lot better than the Ambassador Bridge (yes, I know they are separate)

I travel thru Detroit overtime I go stateside, so I'm excited for the new bridge.

I agree on the "Screw You Moroun" part entirely. Quick refresher for those unfamiliar: he sued both federal governments for attempting to build the new bridge, claiming he has perpetual exclusive rights to the Detroit-Windsor border crossing; he bought up a bunch of homes (many of which are protected heritage buildings) and let them decay, driving down property values in the neighborhood, despite not actually having permits to build his supposedly planned second span of the Ambassador bridge; he had crews try to demolish protected heritage buildings until cops stopped them, so instead he had them gut the buildings (since only the outsides are protected?). I refuse to use the Ambassador bridge ever.

But I think the Gordie Howe Bridge is a good name. It honours a Canadian who was famous for what he did in Detroit - works for both sides.

and if they ever have to add more lanes we can still refer to the original six :)

That was a stupid and populist idea. The two main bridges in Montreal are basically named after the 2 founders of Canada, and crossing over the very way that has been the heart of this colony. Naming it after a hockey player sounded like major drop in historical importance.
