Ogopogo's argument of indirect competition does asuage some of that. There is also the problem of inequality of information.

But isn't it Howe's fault, at least partly, that there was an inequality of information. Going back to Classic's post, if Howe had been a bigger supporter of the Union Lindsay tried to start up, it more than likely would have improved his wage. The Wings probably did screw him, but Howe IMO has to share the blame as well. He played the role of usefull idiot for the Wings quite well.

I will not deny that. His role in undermining the union shot himself in the foot.

It is irrelevant what Howe could have done outside of hockey - he had all the opportunity an more than any of us had.

The Wings were playing hard ball with Howe and he was too naive to play hard ball back.
That is as much Howe's fault as anybody's.
