Why should he? Masks have been studied for the flu for decades and other diseases. 100% of the time masks were found to be useless at best and at times detrimental to spreading the viral illness. Do people actually think this is new technology? Wearing masks to prevent a viral illness?

Its not a new methodology. It's a new hygienic practice.

Just like when people stopped throwing their feces in the street and started flushing it in a purposely made drain. Drains weren't a "new technology" at the time, yet it stopped dysentery from being the most common plague to affect urban populations

Mask wearing and hand-washing were primary health recommendations against the 1918 flu. Nothing has changed, and this is not a new hygienic practice. At least read something of history before you sound off online.

.. Unless you tell me systemic handwashing and mask wearing was commonplace between 1920s to 2020s, I don't understand the point you are trying to make here.

There's still dumbass who won't wear masks, can you imagine? It's a technique from 1920, and some people still don't follow it.

You need to read your history a little more carefully. Masks were indeed widely used during the Spanish Flu outbreak, but they were seen in retrospect as being of limited value, and also to blame for a large number of deaths from bacterial infection. This is why Fauci was initially dismissive of masks last year, the conventional wisdom accumulated over decades of research was that masks were poor at stopping viral transmission, but excellent collectors of bacteria.

I can't remember the exact numbers but I think it reduces the likelihood you get it by 5-10% but reduces the likelihood you give it to someone else by closer to 90%.

So wearing masks is definitely helpful in preventing spreading but doesn't offer you much protection if you're wearing it and Noone else is.
yes, masks are more effective in protecting others from you than they are at protecting you from others

but they still offer the wearer protection and when everyone is masked in a place like a grocery store, they are very effective

Yup.

And that's why science is awesome: we figure why something that should be a solid defensive measure is not optimal.

So initial belief was that it was riskier to make people wear petri dish of virus on their face. And then probably someone pointed out that we can probably mass produce disposable masks to bypass that problem, and suddenly this weak solution became a good solution.

You can't just stop yourself at a binary. "are masks good or bad?". It's a hard question, and everyone was scrambling to get it right.

But I don't doubt for a second that Fauci and all public servants people like him around the world wanted to make it right more than they wanted to cover their ass politically.

It's amazing how a 6th grade science textbook explaining the fundamentals of virology would shed light on like 95% of the issues at hand and yet people (even after a year) still won't inform themselves. Thank you to the select few (you ought to know who you are) for publicly bitchslapping as necessary.

Signed,

It's a numbers game.

Wearing a mask protect other people at 90%
Wearing a mask protects you by 10%

So if everyone wears a mask, people are a lot more protected overall. Less people catch the virus. Some will, but less.

For sure, if everyone is wearing them I think spread is estimated to be reduced by over 90% which is pretty damn good.

Did McCrimmon come to Mtl? He’d have to quarantine for 14 days and might miss the first
couple games of the finals if Vegas makes it.
