Going "off the board"

Dick Axelsson(DET) wasnt even ranked and went 62nd overall.
Fleischman at 63rd.

Was Shawn Matthias a bit high at 47?
Lofberg at 80, considering all of the higher ranked Swedes out there, was surprising.
Ryno was unheard of, too. But at 137 overall, probably not such a surprise.

Kronwall at 29 was considered a huge surprise at the time.

I don't know why some people are considering 7th round gems to be off the board pick.
The whole point to an "off the board / chart" pick is that it's a shocker of a choice.. Nothing is really out of the ordinary in the later rounds, but it's the players in the first round that you've never heard of that make the real off the chart picks.

The Sens do it a fair bit and it's more often then not successful. A recent example would be Brian Lee at 9th when he was expected to be late 1rst at best, the big kicker was there were plenty of high potential dmen ahead of him like Bourdon or Staal.
Most of the big off the chart Sens picks were actually more gambles though like when fishing for Russian superstars when the likelyhood of them not coming over to NA was at it's highest.
