Same here. 2:15 AM is usually the heavy server load time.

Canada's got a higher plus than all the other pluses put together

In fact I'm confident Canada had more goals than all the goals scored by the plus teams combined

Is that a record in goal differential? I know they allowed the least goals ever, and I'm sure few team could match Canada's goal scoring exploits. Seriously though, a goal differential of 34 in 6 games, that's winning every game by approximately six goals. Amazing.

It might be a record, yes. But maybe the Naslund-Forsberg team beat it. I wouldn't be surprised. Didn't they beat Japan like 22-1 or something?

Yes. I remember hearing an analyst take about the game and say they were shocked that Japan was able to score a goal. :joker:

Here are the best ones (+30 or higher) from the history of the tourney.

1977 - Russia +32 (51-19) 7 games
1978 - Russia +32 (51-19) 7 games (not a typo... same as 77)
1979 - Russia + 35 (46-11) 6 games
1982 - Canada +31 (45-14) 7 games
1983 - Russia +37 (50-13) 7 games
1984 - Russia +33 (50-17) 7 games
1985 - Canada +30 (44-14) 7 games
1986 - Canada +33 (54-21) 7 games
1987 - Sweden +34 (45-11) 7 games (Russia and Canada dq'd... no numbers for them)
1989 - Russia +37 (51-14) 7 games
1990 - Czechoslovakia +34 (51-17) 7 games
1993 - Sweden +38 (53-15) 7 games

Interesting note... goalscoring seemed to virtually stop in the mid-90's, and teams would end up with goal totals in the high-20's, or low 30's...

Thanks for that dawgbone. Looks like those pesky '79 Russkies edged us out yet again!

I posted this in an earlier thread, but I thought I'd repost it with the results from this year's tournament. I did records for 1996 and after because that's when they introduced the medal-round play.

All-Time
Most Goals Scored
1986 Canada 54

Fewest Goals Allowed
2001 Russia 7
2005 Canada 7

1996 and After (Entire Tournament)
Most Goals Scored
2000 Sweden 45

Fewest Goals Allowed
2001 Russia 7
2005 Canada 7

1996 and After (Round Robin Only)
Most Goals Scored
2005 Canada 32

Fewest Goals Allowed
2004 Canada 4
2004 United States 4
2001 Czech Republic 4
2000 Russia 4
1996 Canada 4

The scoring stop in the middle 90 because they changed the form of the tournament (and the low-scoring era i guess).

Before you would play all teams once (which mean this year, Canada would have play 3 more game. If the formula would have been the same, every team would have play 10 games and the records we are all talking about would also go to trash as this year Canada team would have play 3 more games: USA, Belarus, Switzerland (and we all know how many goals this mean...)

That's why i like the way many are looking at those records: Before round-robin formula and post-round-robin.

I think it would be an 8 team tourney if they still did it that way.

One of the reasons they changed was because Switzerland used to be a doormat... now they are at least competetive, and would absolutley dominate the lower tiers if they were relegated.

They've made it a 10 team tournament because there are 8 solid hockey countries, and then they do the relegation bump up/down. You never know, in another 10 years this may be a 12 team tournament... it's great for hockey though!

This is exactly why I'm rooting for WJC to be held more often in these upcoming countries/minor hockey countries, instead of the Hockey Canada plan of every three years in Canada.

The problem is that you can't plan for the tournament to be in Belarus/Germany/Latvia/Norway because you don't know if those countries are going to be in the top group that year.

There are the top 7 countries that are almost gauranteed to not get relegated. Then there is Switzerland who hasn't gone down in a while. But the rest are totally up in the air.

Whatching the Ukraine get whooped 14-1 all tournament long in front of a crowd in Kiev isn't going to help hockey get any more popular there than it will if they get whopped 14-1 in another country.

These countries get the B pool world championships as it is...

Hosting should be left for the countries who have proven themselves on the top level... Switzerland went from getting wallpapered every single game to at least being competetive. Until Belarus, or Japan, or whoever can do that, they aren't allowed to stay in the A pool, and they certainly aren't hosting the event.

I hate to break it to you, but watching your home team get slaughtered on home ice isn't going to develope hockey at all.

Yeah, but if the US doesn't let in 2 (meaningless) empty net goals you've got 5 teams on the plus side and 5 on the negative side - almost equal! :)
