While we still have a long ways to go, based on all the talk before and during the season of how the Oilers had the worst tending of the division, I was interested in seeing how things stacked up just before the halfway point.

Calgary:
Jacob Markstrom 8-7-1/2.89/.909 & 2 SO
Dave Rittich 3-5-1/2.93/.904 & 1 SO

Montreal:
Carey Price 7-4-3/2.83/.898
Jake Allen 4-2-3/2.31/.921

Vancouver:
Thatcher Demko 7-9-1/2.87/.913 & 1 SO
Braden Holtby 4-6-1/3.56/.893

Winnipeg:
Connor Hellebuyck 11-7-1/2.73/.911
Laurent Brossoit 4-1/2.57/.923 & 1 SO

Ottawa:
Matt Murray 6-11-1/3.72/.883
Marcus Hogberg 2-5/4.34/.859

Edmonton:
Mike Smith 7-2/2.29/.925 & 2 SO
Mikko Koskinen 7-9/3.39/.897

Toronto:
Freddy Anderson 12-4-2/2.68/.906
Michael Hutchinson 3-2/2.03/.934 & 1 SO
Jack Campbell 3-0/1.33/.951 & 1 SO

I think Markstrom is the big surprise for me, as well as the 2nd and 3rd stringers in Toronto who have posted sparkling numbers in 8 collective games played. Beyond that though it seems like everyone is pretty close thus far. Do you think things will look much different by the end of the season, and more importantly do you think Mikko Koskinen can get himself back around his career average 2.98/.908 with Mike Smith standing strong to give us one of the top tandems in the North with Winnipeg and TO? Or will our season be undone in the second half?

I've no faith that Koskinen can play a consistent game, ergo his numbers might improve slightly but nothing dramatic. His GAA has to get below 3 and SP above 905 which might be a tough ask given how poorly some of our D have played this year (pointing the finger at you Bear and Jones). I do anticipate that Stalock will get a few starts and it will be interesting to see how he fares.

I don’t even think it’s just a Edmonton thing, but I think this is the correct response. There isn’t another division in the NHL that boasts Connor Mcdavid, Leon Draisaitl, Elias Pettersson, Brock Boeser, Mark Sheifle, Nik Ehlers.

IMO if the Oilers aren’t in this division their goaltending would be less of discussion. Not that it doesn’t have to be addressed, Smith turns 39 in 2 weeks, Koskinen is hit or miss depending on the game. But that likely is an offseason issue. Chris Dreidger could be a very very good cheaper pickup, only 26, Florida won’t be doing much being that they have Bobrovsky on an anchor of a deal

The coach could help the situation. Setup a rotation. And sell it to the team. Fresh goalies probably play better than tired or cold goalies.
