Lest we think that the generational gap among opinions is a new one, I found an interesting article while doing a search today.

Published in the Ottawa Citizen (but appears to be a wire story because I saw it in the Montreal Gazette as well), this is Bill Beveridge claiming that goaltenders today get too much credit.

The catch - the article is from May 1965.

Also of minor note, him stating that Nighbor used the slapshot back in the 20s...

Yeah, that's a really intriguing detail. It's a rare find for a qualified observer -- someone who had real memories of the 1920s AND familiarity with modern-style slapshots -- to name a specific player as having used one before 1930 or so. Typically there's some uncertainty from primary sources about what "slapping" the puck meant at the time... not so with this quote.

FWIW, Beveridge only spent a limited amount of time on NHL ice with Nighbor. Circumstances* led to them only playing one day of training camp together, during which time Beveridge was the backup goalie. Beveridge only faced Nighbor as an opponent 1 time, and during that game Nighbor was a lightly used reserve player... to try and pin down a specific example of his slapshot, I checked 4 different sources, and Nighbor wasn't mentioned.

So, unless something happened during the very short window of practice time they spent together in 1929, the circumstantial evidence is that Beveridge is talking about something he saw as a spectator, while living and playing in Ottawa as a teenager. Perhaps something he witnessed from the stands at a Sens game, or while hanging around the rails watching the Sens practice.

* Beveridge attended Hawks camp in 1928, Nighbor held out till the very last minute in 1929, and after training camp Beveridge played senior hockey in Ottawa during the 2-week window before he was traded to Detroit.
