Scenario: I woke up one day as the GM of the Oilers and I was handed back all the picks and the same draft positions from the year following Edmonton's Stanley Cup Finals (2007) up to 2012

I'm allowed to pick players that Edmonton should have picked with the knowledge i have of the players today

THE HOCKEY GODS IMPOSED 2 RULES ON ME:

RULE #1: Your foresight is limited - You can only pick another player from the same round (i.e. if Jamie Benn's been selected in the 5th round, you can't use your 4th round pick to select him, you must wait for your 5th round pick)

RULE #2: You can't pick a player that was chosen before your turn (i.e. if you hold the 5th overall pick... you can't choose players that gone 1 through 4, but you can choose any that went from 5 to 30)

NOTE: DING! DING! DING! means EDM actually got it right

So the team is only made of players under 27 years old?

I'm sure most of these players would not have developped into the player they are today, the team would probably still blow.

Impossible to make all the right choices. Stop living in the past. Way to fix the oilers : start by getting McDavid. Play him with Hall. See what happens.

was just a fun exercise of what, at least some, of the choices could have been

people just grill everything, even when it's a game!

I think its a fun exercise. Edmonton has been really bad in rounds 2+ since like 2008.

Would be more interesting to rank the top 5 players per round and see how often Edmonton drafted one of those guys. If their drafting is average, they should get a top 5 player per round 1 in every 6 rounds.

I don't think that's the case.

If you're going back in time to fix the oilers by drafting go back to 2003 and do that draft right and I bet they don't get anywhere near as bad as they ever did.

If they had kept their original draft pick instead of trading down they could have taken Ryan Getzlaf, or Zach Parise (who was taken with their pick). Hell even if they still traded down Ryan Kesler, Mike Richards and Corey Perry were still on the board. That's not to mention the other players who aren't as good as those guys but are still a damned sight better than what they did get in that draft.

They didn't do any better in the 2nd round either that year.

Wouldnt matter. Edmonton destroys young talent. If they get McDavid he will prob top-out as a Taylor Hall or Eric Staal. Even if they could change there roster with the OP they would have the same problem, just different careers ruined.

I knew the Oilers were bad at picking in non-1st rounds... but wow. That's quite a list of nobodies.

Try doing it realistically. Only change 1 or 2 picks per year. No one expected Benn to be a top line player or half those late rounders to even make the NHL.

2007 Draft:
6 - Gagner (#9 Couture)

2009 Draft:
10 - Paajarvi (#14 Kulikov)
101 - Rajala (#104 Foligno)

2010 Draft:
31 - Pitlick (#47 Toffoli) I remember Toffoli and Pitlick projected to both be late 1st rounders, so not much of a stretch

2012 Draft:
1 - Yakupov (#2 Murray)

Hall - Couture - Eberle
Perron - Nugent-Hopkins - Purcell
Foligno - Draisaitl - Toffoli
bunch of stupid tough guys

Kulikov - Petry
Murray - Ference
Schultz - Fayne

Scrivens
Fasth

Yeah, they still suck.

Not really fair to criticize the Oilers on Pelss. Dude was killed at the age of 19. Not to say he would have panned out, but that's like criticizing the nucks fire picking Luc, or the Rangers for picking cherepanov.

Kinda pointless. Any team could be bolstered if the drafts could be done over with foreknowledge.

However I wonder if the giant black hole of suck of the Oilers could ruin someone as talented as McDavid? Sometimes watching "highlights" of Edmonton games feels like you're standing at the edge of an event horizon.

This is dumb. If you take any team and make the best pick available with hindsight you're going to end up good. There's always a few gems in the later rounds, if Edmonton got to pick all of them of course it will fix them.

I will change no more than 3 in a year or else it's too easy. Not that it matters because I believe they would have messed up the development of most if not all of the players.
