The expansion draft on June 21 looms large over the other 30 teams. Many of the players moved at the deadline — Valtteri Filppula to the Philaelphia Flyers, Eric Fehr to the Toronto Maple Leafs and Mark Streit to the Pittsburgh Penguins — were dealt specifically with the expansion draft in mind.

More moves are still coming. A team not wanting to lose a key player to the Golden Knights in the expansion draft can instead offer Vegas a trade in the form of prospects or draft picks, meaning McPhee should have no shortage of dinner dates this week.

“We were talking to clubs anyway in general terms and trying to set the table for expansion,†said McPhee, “trying to see if we could learn anything from clubs, and they were trying to find out what they could learn from us. Some people hold things close to the chest and some are more straightforward. So it depends on who you’re talking to.

McPhee and his staff held a mock expansion draft back in September to get an idea of what the process is like and what players might be out there. It took hours to complete, he said. Since then, he and his team have conducted the exercise three more times, with players moving up or down the depth chart not only based on their performance, but whether he believes a team might protect them.

“They are time-consuming and intense,†said McPhee, who has a better idea of which players will be protected. “But it serves a lot of purposes, in particular, with the rules. We get more comfortable with each other, because we’re a new staff and we feel like a staff that’s been together a while now because we’ve met so many times.

31 seats at the meeting this week.
