Nope, Sakic was the better player.

GM, Yzerman has the nod for now.

Their points and production is close you could pull a straw from a hat. The true difference maker is that Yzerman was the superior leader on the ice and rallied his team to win so many more division titles, president trophies and one more Stanley Cup over Sakic.

Yzerman was the better "C".

LOL, Sakic was the superior player, he was more clutch and clearly a better leader than Yzerman but okay...

For people who watched during the 70s, I'm sure Philadelphia GM Bobby Clarke versus Montreal GM Bob Gainey was pretty interesting.

LA has former captain Rob Blake as GM but they didn't win Cups with him, Boston has Don Sweeney but he was never captain.

What? This two seem always to have the same path, great NHL career, similar stats, both are among the greatest captains of all time and now both GM of the team they played for, Colorado and Detroit.

Uh.

Their career totals may look similar - but their career paths are actually not that similar at all. Which is what I took the first post to mean.

Yzerman was an offensive guru up to age 27-28 or so. Then he became more of a defense player - still great offense, but significantly less than before. And in his last few seasons his offense dried up even more.

Sakic peaked offensively at age 31. He also had a 100 point season at age 37. He also combined Selke defense and league leading offense (#2) at same time in 2001, whereas with Yzerman in his career it was usually either/or.

In terms of playoffs - Sakic has the best single run between the 2 by far. Yzerman has very strong playoffs overall, but he was never a world beater come playoff-time, Sakic has a bit of an edge there.

Of course there are similarities between the 2 - but their career arcs/path are actually not all that similar. I stand by my initial comment.

"Similar" is not a synonym for "literally identical".

No but the poster I quoted asked "are there 2 players in the history of hockey with a career as similar". That sounds pretty close to "literally identical" as you can get.

They have some strong similarities - but their paths were also very different. So yes - there are definitely players in the history of hockey with careers more similar to each other.

This is the best take. One is not heads and shoulders better than the other. They are statistically pretty even as players.

Not getting into a who wore it best over the captaincy.
