Why the **** was that called?

Because it looked like a penalty.

Things happen pretty fast out there, and a lot of calls are made simply because they have the visual optics of a stereotypical call.

In this case, Maroon's stick and hands were in the typical positions of a holding call, and the guy happened to fall backward like there was a force being exerted on him in that direction. In reality he just lost an edge, but refs aren't always going to be able to see that accurately in real time.
