I could be wrong but i think they were in the middle of a change there.
They were..one thing about this year's team is they have had more bad changes than previous teams have had and as a result more too many men on the ice penalties..nowhere close to the Oates days but worse than Trotz.

On the note of stupid penalties... I can’t remember our last delay game for throwin the puck over the glass. Those useto doom us all the time even to send us 2 men down

I think the main thing without Kempny is they've got to lean on the forwards more, hope to play more territorial and at least maintain a stronger semblance of functional breakouts. Tweak the middle six, clean up the breakouts and they could cruise. Sitting back will be much more problematic than last year, though, absent Siegenthaler becoming a helpful addition capable of playing some meaningful minutes. They can afford to be somewhat patient with Djoos but what's the upside? He averaged just 10:51 last season. Will that be enough? They've acknowledged he's not at last year's level and...last year's usage was fairly minimal.

Hagelin, eller, wilson with more toi than the big guns. Hagelin with over 20. Career high? Wtf is going on
Hags plays almost the entire PK and now 2nd line to protect Kuz.
And those 3 players are our best defenders so with a big lead they get more ice time. Save Backstrom you do not want to waste minutes of him being a defensive specialist

Can Kempny really be this important to our D? If this is what Carolina does to us I am scared to think about what teams with more potent offenses will do. Hopefully it was just a bad game from them.

What did they do to us?

Kempny is important of course but he isn't Carlson important. If the Caps lose this series it won't be because Michael Kempny was missing.

I thought they capitalized on our inability to conduct clean breakouts and we also looked lost in coverage when the puck was behind our net. I think their forecheck made it difficult on Djoos and Jensen in particular.

Caps definitely need to be a step quicker in their coverage, Ovie on Svechnikov for one, but I just didn't think the Canes looked dangerous and their shot map shows that. They have the puck a lot down below the goal line, I'll give you that.

Caps can work on the first forward down low helping with that and hopefully relieving the pressure on the D.

I think the reason the Canes do not generate more high danger chances is their lack of skill, particularly passing. They had a ton of people open in front but rarely made the pass on their tape. The one time they did they scored (second goal). Which is why I think a team with more skill could exploit this weakness.

Well then let's hope, if we can beat the Canes, we don't play a team with more skill. ;)

Sam Spade: out of curiosity, what's the source or website of this lovely chart? If you generated it, hats off to you, but if not, I thank you equally for sharing it.

Interesting game. Good always to get a win and I think the shot totals are misleading. We were better in the 1st, 2nd was fine, 3rd I think this is a bad team to turtle against because they step up so much anyway, you’re inviting them to play their own game at no risk.

I have no problem with Backstrom playing with Ovi of course but I think it makes the rest of the line up uneven. Vrana can’t play with Kuzy at this stage and Vrana also isn’t really a fit for Eller.

The third line with Hags buys us offensive zone time. Getting that pressure and cycle for then the top 2 lines to attack feels better to me.

I know Kuzy has been struggling and when Kuzy struggles the top line gets hemmed in when he plays on it, but I think go back to playoff lines again as it suits the team. Also I think it helps out the D more.

Carlson played great on his off wing. Niskanen was good thankfully. Orpik fantastic.

I think keep up the physical play obviously and just be careful of sitting on a lead. Also forwards need to come back a little quicker defensively and not fly the zone as quick.

Take that after a lay-off.

Hagelin is great and a big part of our pk turning around.

That said - he shouldn’t ever lead all our forwards in ice time. In fact, he should never be too 5 forwards in ice time...
