Bettman says NHL wants cut of gambling action

"From our standpoint, we believe that that whether it's our intellectual property or data, whether it's video of our game, we have important assets. And if somebody is going to avail themselves or want to avail themselves of those assets in order to conduct their business, then we're going to need to have a negotiation."

Bettman sounds like a mob boss from back in the 50s.

NHL's road to gambling revenue lengthy despite Supreme Court ruling - Sportsnet.ca

North American sports leagues control their intellectual property through copyrighted names, logos, video footage and proprietary data. There is little to no indication that the new sports gambling systems will require any of those elements. As we’ve seen in previous attempts (in Canada and in Nevada), using city names without any league affiliation is allowable, therefore no licensing is required.

Tonight Tampa Bay is playing Pittsburgh in professional hockey. Wagers being taken... and no mention of what league this involves.

There you go Mr. Bettman.

Bettman probably thinks the NHL has a copyright on hockey in general.

It's big business so no surprise Bettman wants in. Still as others have said you get a team in Vegas, why not somewhat reference gambling and call them the Aces instead of ugh the Golden Knights.

I'm surprised not linking the game to a specific league is allowed. What if someone starts another hockey league with teams playing at the same time from the same city? What constitues "professional" portion is debatable.

The leagues and the NCAA waged holy war against my state (NJ) for years on this before our recent Supreme Court victory. Oral argument apparently didn't go their way - in the time between that and the decision, they wanted a 1% cut, then down to 0.25%. Quite gutsy given they fought NJ for years (and the NCAA blacklisted Pru Center from postseason tournaments).

The state naturally told them off to shove off and is, if it hasn't already, going to sue for years of lost tax revenue. Monmouth Park (a race track that now has sports betting) already has filed suit. These lawsuits actually have a shot as a federal judge made the leagues post a bond for a few months of lost revenue if they lost. Needless to say, it's been years.

European sports leagues get no cut from betting companies (some have them as club or league sponsors though), maybe US betting companies could use that as an example?

why are people ripping Bettman? every damn league wants this as well..

of course they do & they should go after it as well. It is their intellectual property being used...they should be compensated accordingly.

why should the fans get a cut unless they are ones betting & happen to win....

Because fans are the ones paying into the leagues. It's interesting that teams exist only because of fans and yet fans never get a return on their investment.

No one is forcing fans to spend money or time. If fans as you claim don't get their ROI then they can stop "investing".

If you want to take financial advantage of legalization, start a casino (if your state allows this) or invest in one. Or any other business associated with this activity including pro sports themselves.

They can stop investing in their own culture and heritage? This is really not much of a choice.

Sports is more than mere business. It is a way of life. It is curious to see something we hold so dear become commodified and split among the very few.

The idea that the only people who deserve to benefit from the proceeds of professional sports are businesspeople is astoundingly short sided.

Whether it's legal or not depends on state law, and in places with legal gambling already it's not legal. Several states also require that bookies use official league stats, because if casinos are keeping their own stats- yeah. Pretty key anti-fraud measure. So leagues are talking about charging for commercial use of their statistical data.

And of course the NHL wants a cut. They have every right to want a cut when somebody else is making money off of their product.
