I would have easily done 4 years at that number. Dubas probably couldn't find a way to free up some money while signing Marner at the same time.

Turns out Gardiner did have more value than a few around here were saying.

We officially have a complete roster turnover from the disaster of 2013. Not a single player remains from the 2013 collapse.

New energy in the locker room.

Jake can thank Mitch for having to move on
Jake can thank all 3 of the big 3 for having to move on.

At the number he signed at, it would have only took them signing for a collective $4M less to keep him around.

Could’ve maybe signed him if Marner weren’t holding out and we knew what we were working with.

Whether that’s a blessing or a curse I don’t know. Gardiner is the last of the players I wanted him after the loss to the Bruins. I think he’s a better player than Ceci but at the end of the day Ceci may be a better fit playing with Rielly and we won’t have to watch another Gardiner Game 7 meltdown again.

I'm not a Gardiner fan even, but that's a hell of a deal.

Can a D be shaken out of Carolina possibly?

Took them more than 5 years to do so, this has been painfully long.

Isn't that what Ceci is making? Rather have Gardiner, guess Dubas didn't

True enough. Each one took every penny they could get

Identical cap hit to his most recent Leaf contract with a year less of term. Interesting to have Gardiner and Thornton off the market now. Hopefully a sign of the urgency to come on other fronts.

Ceci is on a 1 year deal in Toronto and had a qualifying offer of at least 4.3 million. People love to purposely leave out context.

But still a good deal for Carolina (If Jake's back is good to go).

Okay - for consistency
I would have been quite fine walking away from Jake, because i thought he'd want like stupid amounts of money. I wouldn't really want to like overpay Jake (or anyone) .

but the fact that he waited this long because he wanted to be a Leaf and obviously would have taken "less" (back issues nonwithstanding) and signed for that steal of a deal. that drives me nuts. And if the only reason why we don't have Jake (issues and all), is because of Mitch.... well my view of Mitch just went down three notches today.

Dubas made a mistake on this. If Gardiner was given this contract by Carolina, he easily would have taken a little less on a four year deal to stay with the Leafs. The Leafs could have easily signed him by trading Ceci and had money to spare.

Dubas didn't plan out this and do his homework. Gardiner at that price should still be a Leafs. 5+ million a season I would have been ok with it, but not this price.

They didn't have to acquire him in the first place.
