It is what it is, a poorly built team, depending on 3 forwards up front insulated by a bunch of veteran guys who could replaced by a bunch of minimum salary guys with little difference.

No disagreement here.

Yeah, the whole point is to strip away the results of OT/SO, because those results are random. But getting to a coin flip is a good thing for a sub-.500 team, and a bad thing for an above-.500 team. Just like in the pre-OT NHL, getting a tie was a good thing for a sub-.500 team (improved their point percentage).

To take an extreme example, in the pre-OT NHL, a team that went from 30-50-0 to 3-5-72 would have improved.
.500 is a bar that doesn't mean anything anymore, the last time a team even close to that level made the playoffs was two decades ago. I don't think it matters.

I use this site for standings all season, I think it gives the best snap shot at what level that team is at. NHL standings at the end of play on Monday, March 18, 2019

Good point.

But I think for a fair comparison you need to add the ties back in. Getting more games to the coin flip is progress for a sub-.500 team. With the regulation ties included:

2015-16: 22-38-22 (.402)
2016-17: 19-43-20 (.354)
2017-18: 25-40-17 (.409)
2018-19: 20-32-20 (.417)

For an even better comparison, we should probably look at regulation GF/GA. Anyone have those data handy?

That's a fair point. But we will see if those extra ties come out of the W or the L column. Are they going to match their 25 regulation wins of last year? With only ten games left, it seems unlikely.

It was a disappointing win in that again we were badly outshot, and won on the terrific performance of Markstrom. He is killing the tank but I gotta hand it to him for a great personal season. Play demko the rest of the way please! Never gonna happen I know, as Green wants the Ws.

Best thing to come out of this game was that Pettersson looked like his old (I know it sounds weird) self. He was electric, quick, and his reaction and anticipation time was top notch. He’s clearly over whatever was holding him back the last dozen games, whether it be physical or mental.
