I think any game 7 that goes into OT is pretty much an automatic nail-biter classic. I can't think of one that was bad.

Greats =

1994 ECF - rangers beat devils in OT. matteau, matteau!

2000 ECF - devils beat Flyers. Patrik Elias scores the winning goal with a couple of minutes left after lifting Dan McGillis's stick for his second of the game. This is also the game when Lindros was TKOed.

2003 ECF - the skilled Sens outplay the Devils all game, but Brodeur keeps it close. Jeff friesen scores the winning goal with less than two minutes left, taking a pass that went between Reddens skates.

This one definately, so much pressure on NYR, I think if you were there in the arena you could cut the tension with a butterknife and then to pull it out with a win with the crowd and Mike Keenan going ballistic and that classic call "matteau"

Hmm im mixed about this one, If i recall I think Lindros was starting to catch fire even though they lost game 6, so going into game 7 alot of anticipation and then THUD
its like getting ready for a roller coaster ride and having to get out cause it broke down. After that it seemed inevitable.

Homer pick for sure (despite the outcome), but game seven of the 1997 ECQF between Ottawa and Buffalo is right up there too. This was Ottawa's first postseason after their initial four years, where they somehow managed to finish 30th in a 26-team league, and the entire city of Ottawa pretty much shut down for this game.

Ottawa had a 2-1 lead early in the third period, when Alexei Yashin won a defensive-zone faceoff right into his own net to tie the game. Derek Plante scored the overtime winner for Buffalo with a slapper that hit the top of Ron Tugnutt's glove and bounced in. Broke my heart, but it was a hell of a ride

Given that they are playing for the 33rd time in their histories:

Best - Game 7 of the 1979 semi finals between the Habs and Bruins. Bruins up 3-1 in the 3rd period of game 7 and Habs manage to tie it up. Bruins then retake lead and with a couple of minutes left take a two many men on the ice penalty. Lafleur scores on the ensuing PP with a minute and change left sending game to OT where the Habs win it.

Worst - The 2008 Series between the Habs and Bruins - Bruins are down 3 games to 1 in the series and play inspired hockey and come back to even the series at 3 and send the series back to Montreal for a game 7. Boston lays an egg and Montreal wins game 7, 5-0.

... The two I can think of off hand are: the best being the 1993 CCF, and the worst being the 1991 SCF.

I am by no means a Ranger fan, but I still get the chills when I hear "Matteau, Matteau, Matteau!" That was one of the greatest series in playoff history, and if you ask me, I'll go as far as to say it was the very best. Because the Devils trapped their way to the Cup the following year, and that style of hockey became their forte for the rest of the dead puck era, it's easy to forget how good that 94 New Jersey team actually was. They were 2nd in goals for and 2nd in goals against during the regular season. Scott Stevens was never better than he was that year. That entire series against the Rangers was something special. Matteau's OT goal in Game 3 will always stick out in my mind because it honestly sounded like they were playing at MSG when he scored. Rangers fans were easily the majority in the Meadowlands, and they were so loud.

Worst from an objective point of view: Pens/Caps 09.

These two were the first I thought of for worst in recent years. Even the Avs/Wings blowout was ok because it fit somewhat in the context of the Wings overpowering the declining Avs dynasty... there was a storyline to the blowout. But both of the games above were cases of an epic series fizzling at the end.

Best:

Flyers - Bruins - 2010 - down 0-3 and 0-3
Rangers - Devils - 1994 - Matteau, Matteau
Canucks - Flames - 1989 - Joel Otto kick in
Islanders - Capitals - 1987 - Easter epic
Canadians - Bruins - 1979 - too many men

That was so awesome. Down a goal on the road in game 7 in the third period with 90 seconds to go and we score two goals to win.

Best:

04 Flames vs. Cannucks- Flames look like they will get the sure win and Iggy maybe with a hat-trick to cap off his greatest game ever....then the jersey throw...then the missed empty net shot....then the stick slash on Iginla...then Matt Cooke scores in what probably has to be the lowdest ovation at GM place until the Golden Goal. All intermission every Flames fan thinks its over and is so upset...then OT starts and Gelinas gets the game winner. Such a flow of emotion from both teams who gave it there all.

Worst:
06 Ducks vs Flames Ducks win 3-0 Flames show no bite it was awful to be there

Yeah apart of me (Avs fan) hated it, but the un-biased hockey fan in me was both let down, awed and just shocked by it. Worst of all I remember working at the time and having to listen to it on radio. Me and friend just starting laughing after it was 4-0. Definately a phantom menace of a game here.

Rangers fans were never "the majority" at the Meadowlands after the 1980s. There were a lot of them, however.

This. A most surprising stat especially considering the legacy those teams are known for, stingy D. But that team had some great OFF players, Nicholls, Richer, Lemieux, Maclean- i think like 14/15 guys with 10+ goals.

That goal (and subsequent crowd reaction) is the moment that defines the sport for me

Yes!, i remember watching that and being blown away, stuff that life puts a huge smile on my face. Im sure today if I ever got to see a SCF game 7 that close to the ice in person id have to pay a mint, but to be in a moment like that it would be worth it.
