BOSTON vs LOS ANGELES, LIFETIME SERIES

The Bruins and Kings are meeting for the 139th time in their histories with the Bruins having an 83-38-13-4 record and 548-429 scoring advantage in those games.

The Bruins are 35-25-7-1 in their 68 road games of this lifetime series with a 242-232 scoring edge in those contests.

The Bruins won the 1st game of this season’s series with a 1-0 victory in Boston on 12/18 and they are now 5-4-3 in their last 15 games overall vs. the Kings … They have lost their last 3 games in Los Angeles with their last road win over the Kings a 4-2 victory on 3/24/2012, and they are 1-4-1 in their last 6 visits to Los Angeles.

Fun Fact – 13 of the last 15 games between theses teams have been either 1-goal (2-1-4 record) or 2-goal (3-3-0 mark) decisions

TONIGHT’S GAME

The Bruins visit the Kings tonight in the 2nd & final game between these teams and the Bruins’ lone visit this season to STAPLES Center … The Bruins are 30-24-6 thus far this season with a 15-11-6 mark on the road … They are 5-4-0 vs. Pacific Division opponents and are 9-10-0 vs. Western Conference teams this season.

The Bruins are playing game 3 tonight on their 4-game road trip (1-1-0), which matches their longest such trek of the season (it is their 4th of 5 4-game trips) & comes as they concluded their 5-day bye week, which took place 2/13-17.

They are concluding tonight their 11th of 14 sets of back-to-back games, as they played in Anaheim last night … They are 6-3-2 in the 1st of those games and are 2-6-2 in the 2nd game thus far.

The Boston Bruins and Los Angeles Kings face off Thursday at Staples Center in a pivotal game for both team's playoff prospects.

The Bruins (30-24-6) took their first loss in five games under interim coach Bruce Cassidy on Wednesday, dropping a 5-3 decision to the Anaheim Ducks.

Boston remains one point behind the Toronto Maple Leafs for third place in Atlantic Division, and the Bruins are tied with the Florida Panthers and the New York Islanders for the second Eastern Conference wild-card spot. However, the Maple Leafs, Panthers and Islanders each have a game in hand on Boston.

The Bruins extended their recent lack of success playing in California, registering a ninth loss in their past 11 games contested in the Golden State.

With the Bruins set to play for a second night in a row, they are scheduled to turn to backup goaltender Anton Khudobin to face the Kings. Finding a reliable goaltender to spell starter Tuukka Rask has been one of Boston's shortcomings, as Khudobin has a 2-5-1 record, a 3.05 goals-against average and an .888 save percentage in nine games.

Boston will complete its 11th set of back-to-back games, and the Bruins are 2-6-2 in the second game thus far.

Cassidy knows regardless of who is between the pipes, his team will need a far better collective effort than the one against Anaheim. The Bruins responded well after he replaced Claude Julien but Tuesday fell into the same bad habits that were presented prior to his promotion from assistant coach.

"Good teams don't beat themselves, and we definitely had a little bit of that tonight," Cassidy said. "At the end of the day, you've got to defend the front of the net better than we did tonight."

The Bruins' recent success has been keyed by getting production throughout the lineup, raising the team to 12th in the league in goals scored.

"We need to keep our confidence up, we've been playing very well lately," Boston center Riley Nash said. "If you can have four lines and six defenseman rolling, you wear a lot of teams down".

The Kings (29-26-4) broke a three game losing streak Tuesday with an unimpressive 2-1 road win over the NHL's worst team, the Colorado Avalanche.

Expected to compete for the Pacific Division title at the start of the season, the Kings haven't been able to find consistent offense. Their present ranking of 24th in the league at 2.44 goals per game is a big reason why they are chasing a Western Conference wild-card position instead of a division crown.

With 23 games remaining for Los Angeles, each game has increasing importance, and the players are aware that they must improve their performance and get results. Their puck-possession offense still creates opportunities, and their defense is still solid, but the lack of goal-scoring has the Kings at the top of the list of clubs looking to add a skilled forward by the March 1 trade deadline.

"We need to win some games and get a streak going so we can get into the playoffs, so we can be comfortable and not be waiting until the last game of the season," Los Angeles center Tyler Toffoli said.

While the win against Colorado alleviate the pressure of a growing losing streak, the Kings know their level of performance needs to improve significantly over the season's final weeks. A one-goal win against a cellar-dweller is not the type of effort that will defeat a Boston team that has found its stride under Cassidy.

"We'll look at the good stuff we did and we'll probably compare it to other games and look at that kind of stuff and move in to Thursday against Boston and hopefully we can keep it going," Kings left winger Tanner Pearson said.

Goalie Peter Budaj, who has played the majority of the games in the absence of Jonathan Quick, appears to be back on track after a stretch of yielding 19 goals in five goals. He gave up just one goal in each of his past two games, the victory against Colorado and a 1-0 loss in Anaheim on Sunday.

A change in the goaltending rotation is on the horizon as Quick nears a return from the groin injury that has sidelined him for all but 20 minutes of play this season. The Kings placed Jeff Zatkoff on waivers Wednesday, and with Quick still seven to 14 days away, they will either recall Jack Campbell from their AHL Ontario affiliate or trade for a backup goalie.

Kings like the B`s, on the outside looking in, the Ducks are playing sub .500 hockey over the last 10 but they are a better team than that from all I have read

Kings just haven`t gotten anything going this season, of course, losing Quick hasn`t helped but I read Kopitar is having a less than stellar season, not sure he`s even hit double digits for goals and I think I heard on a show here he was a - player, albeit only like a minus 1 or 2 but still, for him, that`s not normal

Loved walking up to Staples on a sunny late afternoon with an abundant of Palm Trees circling the Centre with the temperature in the low 70's......and the Bruins won that March 24,2012 game 4-2 with Timmy stealing the game for them. Kings fans were patting me on the back on the outdoor concourse between periods thanking the Bruins for beating the Canucks:laugh:
Too bad they weren't beers instead....:naughty:

Record option will be in place again for tonight. Absoutley need points from this one. Suprising the kings have stayed in the conversation up to this point of the season. Quick has been out for the season and Budji came out of nowhere when he was rescued from the minors, really out of desperation, and he has unbelievably over performed to keep them in it.

No excuses tonight B's. Quick turn around with an opportunity to redeem themselves from last nights defensive mess.

Let's go Bruins!

Why 1030 and not 10? New fans in Hawaii?

I think most NHL teams like to have a "regularly scheduled time" for their non-nationally-televised night games, and the Kings seemed to have picked "7:30 for weekdays, 7:00 for Saturday" - perhaps because LA traffic precludes people from getting to the game early?

Bruins almost always start at 7. Habs start at 7:30. Those are the only ones I've noticed, but I'm sure there are patterns in the schedule. The STHs probably like it, because they know if it's a non-Wednesday game, they know the time.

This game could be Khudobin's second-to-last stand. We only have two more B2Bs. With VAN and CGY/EDM, it's a weird situation. Vancouver's clearly the worst team, and they'll be gassed at the end of an 8-in-14 stretch. Calgary and Edmonton have fairly easy schedules, but are back-to-back. Khudobin plays one of those three, but I'd almost be understanding of playing Rask back-to-back.

Our next back-to-back is awful: Toronto and Ottawa. Those are the teams we need to pass. I totally get playing Rask back-to-back there.

And as far as the rest of the stretch...I have an awful feeling we're going to be riding Rask until we're out of the playoffs. Remember how well that worked last year?

The have to rebound. Can't lose more ground on the top-3 in Atlantic as #2WC is a spot yoiu just don't want with a 1st round against Wsh.

Let's win this! Let's go Khudobin! Give us a good game for once!
