Ansar Khan: Same issues continue to plague Red Wings at home, where they are winless in their past seven games

DETROIT – Detroit Red Wings captain Henrik Zetterberg stood in the dressing room following Friday’s game feeling like he has fielded the same questions over and over the past two weeks.

Why can’t his team hold onto the lead? Why can’t it get a timely goal? Why can’t it win at home?

The Red Wings can’t get out of this rut. They squandered a two-goal lead in the third period and lost to the Washington Capitals 4-3 in a shootout at Joe Louis Arena, extending their home winless streak to seven games (0-1-6), their longest since the 1989-90 season.

Overall, the Red Wings are winless in five (0-1-4).

“Well, obviously we’re letting in goals that we shouldn’t let in and we’re not scoring on the chances that we’re creating,’’ Zetterberg said. “Again, we think we’re doing a lot of good things, but I feel like I’m standing here and repeating myself.

“I don’t know, there’s nothing else we can do. We have to keep trying to play for 60 minutes and we should win this game. We played good enough and (goaltender Jimmy Howard) was good enough.’’
...

“Same thing, same outcome but we can’t get frustrated, can’t get discouraged,’’ Howard said. “Somehow, some way keep a positive frame of mind and just continue to keep going out there and working because we’re doing a lot of good things. Mistakes happen, we’re just going to have to find a way to overcome them.’’

...

“Obviously, you’d like to have enough players but it worked out good, our rotation was fine,’’ Babcock said. “That had nothing to do with the game.’’

General manager Ken Holland said Alfredsson’s status for Saturday’s game at the New York Islanders will be determined in the morning. If Alfredsson can’t play, Holland said Luke Glendening will be inserted into the lineup. Glendening was recalled from the Grand Rapids Griffins on an emergency basis.

I'm gonna make a prediction here, I know this is a longshot, but I'm gonna go ahead and predict an OT/SO loss for the Wings

GDT updated.

Somehow we're still 4th in the East. That's how broken the point system is. Rewarding mediocrity.

And just the opponent we need to get a win. The Islanders, a team that are looking to beat the Wings for a seventh time straight

I couldn't even find a Youtube clip worth putting in the GDT

How do we recall Glendening?
I thought we only had enough cap to call up Emmerton?

The more I look at our cap problems the more the solution points to dumping Quincey

Yes, me too.

There could be a CBA "loophole" for those emergency callups, but I'm not sure. Maybe this case Alfredsson matches those criterias. But you can't play with that trick all the time.

Ansar Khan ‏@AnsarKhanMLive 13h
The Wings recalled Glendening from Grand Rapids to be on emergency recall if Alfredsson can't play tomorrow, Hollland said.

Just watch Holland do it. He's gone a couple months using this LTIR trick. Now watch him do this.

Yes, found the article, where the rule was.

Provision 50.10(e) of the agreement is called the “roster emergency exception,” and it will allow, for the first time, teams to call up players that won’t count against the cap.

There are a pile of stipulations involved, as you can imagine:

1) Teams have to have less cap room than the league minimum salary (which is $550,000 this season) plus $100,000

2) A player has to become “unfit or unable to play” or be suspended

3) The team is unable to recall a player using the long-term injury provision

4) The team played its last game with fewer than 20 players (18 skaters and two goaltenders)

If those conditions are met, teams can then add players who make $650,000 or less “without any charge to the club’s averaged club salary for the duration of such roster emergency.”

Like we have:

1) 545k of cap room (less than 650k limit at this season).
2) Alfredsson became unfit.
3) No one is in LTIR.
4) We played the Capitals game with 1 man short of 20 players.
5) We can add a player (like Glendening at 575k) that earns less than 650k.

This move saves some space next year's cap, because our daily figure will be 545k under the cap, but it saves a small part of Alfredsson's bonuses sliding to next year.

Just an FYI, error in NYI's stats leaders. Says Tavares has 23 assists and 23 points. Didn't bother to look it up but surely JT must have some goals...I hope?

Not confident for this game, maybe Franzen will still be putting effort in tonight

I agree 100%.

I do think Quincey can turn the corner a bit, but as a pending UFA I don't think he brings anything that the youth can't bring...and certainly not enough to outweigh the benefit of brining up Nyquist.

20 games into the situation, the solution is pretty obvious.

So if Alfie still can't play, bring up Glendening? Nah we'll just let Nyquist rot in Grand Rapids. We don't need more scoring. I like are team. They've been realgud.

All this because they just couldn't resist signing Dan ****ing Cleary this summer, they should have just been happy and contempt with him signing in philly
