Studnicka and Coyle present a little bit of a problem in that they're both natural centers who are much better in the middle than on the wing. But when Krejci returns only one of them can be 3C, and I don't see Stud as a 4th liner - he's already better than that and it's not his game style.

I think on balance Coyle is a bigger waste on wing than Jack, plus he's the senior and at this stage better player, so when Krej comes back they probably try Stud at 3RW again and see how he goes with a little more experience under his belt. If it doesn't work they can always just return him to being first man up whenever a top 9 center becomes unavailable.

If Studnicka is already better than a 4th liner as you said, that's a good problem to have.

He should have no problem centering a 4th line that would cause other 4th lines headaches and mismatches.

We played with passion and heart today, were hitting everything in site, great win.
CC was on fire his best game of the year.
McKegg looked rusty and slow, but that is to be expected since it was his first game of the year.
Shows you how much we miss DK and every other C moving down one line.
Kuraly looked much better on the wing.
Mac played great again.
Loved the fight with Ritchie and BL at the end. BL was lucky he was wearing a visor, Ritchie clocked him with a few nice shots to the face.

That was a really great effort from start to finish. Don't see that too often. You could really see the desperation. Truthfully, with the group they are rolling with right now, they're going to need that type of effort to win on most nights.

Zboril played a pretty sound three zone game and really stepped up his play. His game has tailed off recently to the point where he was probably on the verge of being a healthy scratch.

Vaak was solid as well. For the most part. He just looks so slight and frail physically. Also needs to quicken up the pace and decision making. Instincts are obvious. Averaging 21 minutes/game since re-call. Can't really complain too much about his performance.

I agree that Studnicka should remain at center. His progress is just as important as all those LHD.

Anyone know what exactly earned Smith his late penalty? NHL pbp just says unsportsmanlike conduct against Kevin Rooney. I'd never even heard of that guy and at first thought Chris Rooney was reffing this game and Smith have him a mouthful. I would've dug it (both trash talking the ref and putting like that in the boxscore).

think he finished a check on an icing

I seem to recall that pulling the goalie was never a “thing” that Soviet coaches did, even in later eras when winning was not quite as prevalent. Don’t know why, if they just didn’t believe it was beneficial or if it was just some specific coaches that didn’t do it. Either way, I’m not so sure it was a mistake by Tikhonov in this instance.

You’re right though that that team was very used to winning and it could be interpreted as a very unfamiliar situation for them.

In one of the articles I have read about that game a Russian player admitted they'd never been in that situation before and they panicked.

To this day I do not understand Tikhonov pulling Tretiak.

I just read through the Rags GDT. There were a couple of posts that should not have been allowed. One was to hit Bergie in the head with a baseball bat ( I reported...it is gone but never should have been allowed to stay as long as it did). and this gem "Randy Jones deserves an apology from me." Talk about needing a hit to the head with a baseball bat...

VERY ignorant. It was just a few posters. I don't think most of their posts were any worse that they are here after a loss. Those few were really poor and the posters assholes.

Watched my favorite George Lucas film last night. American Graffiti. In this fine movie, the two main characters, Ron Howard and Richard Dreyfus, portrayed 18 year old HS graduates. In real life Howard was 19 at the time, which makes sense. However, Dreyfus was passing for 18 at the real age of 26.
However, Dreyfus wasn't the oldest 'teenager' in film; Dustin Hoffman played 18 at the real age of 30 in the movie The Graduate.

Apologies concerning The Graduate. Hoffman portrayed a 22 year old college graduate, not an 18 year old HS graduate. My bad.

My fandom of Nick Ritchie grows with each game. Fearless in front of the net, contributes offensively, effective on the PP, and takes no prisoners when dropping the gloves. Should we send a thank you note to Mike Milbury for allegedly 'body-shaming' him last year?

Studnicka has looked very good. Small sample size but I do hope he's not another guy that does everything right except finish.

The three new faces did their job, more or less, the goal notwithstanding. Ate minutes in the offensive zone, made safe clears (Kampfer) and I liked McKegg's response after the goal. Despite what Boucher saw, Blackwell gave him a bit of a cross check after scoring, and McKegg became a powder keg.

The bumper music NBC used was possibly the worst I have ever heard. At first I thought they were just cutting costs using generic, royalty free tracks. But by the end of the game, I was convinced Kenny Albert brought his 80's Casio keyboard from home and was just hitting random keys as they went to commercial.

I thought McKegg did fine. DeBrusk did not. Agreed in the visor saving Lemieux. Unfortunate, since he is a second generation piece of [crap]. Aside from the one goal against us, which looked like nap time, it was very refreshing and looked like a completely different team.

That was a much more engaging game. I noticed some comments about McKegg holding his own. I hate to criticize a guy who has worked hard to get where he is, but he really doesn’t look like he can skate with NHL caliber players.

Yep. What was that all about? It was awful.

If Studnicka is already better than a 4th liner as you said, that's a good problem to have.

Possibly. I tend to see the 4th line as a specialist role. Some people think you can just plug anyone in there and as long as they're NHL calibre and put in the effort then they should be fine. But I think it takes a particular skill set and style of play, and the best 4th liners are those who make a speciality out of it - a line of committed, hard-checking grinders will generally outplay one that may be a little more skilled but doesn't have that same understanding of how a 4th is going to be most effective at shutting down opponents and transitioning to offense and building up some good zone time where possible.

Which isn't to say that Studnicka can't play a 4C role. He may well adapt to it quite nicely. But it would require exactly that - adaptation from his natural game which for most of his junior career has been among the more skilled guys and top lines. If they try it good luck to him, would be a nice extra option for the Bs. But it's not guaranteed to work.
