Ansar Khan: Red Wings' sense of urgency increasing as they seek solutions to snap five-game winless streak

DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings are barely one-third of the way into the season but already feeling a huge sense of urgency, coach Mike Babcock said.

“But, I don’t think the sense of urgency is any different than it was yesterday,'' Babcock said on Friday.

It should be. It has to be, after a crushing 3-2 loss to the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday, when two important points the Red Wings were counting on disappeared after they blew a 2-0 lead and surrendered the winning goal with 24.7 seconds to play.

The Red Wings (7-7-3) are only one point out of the eighth and final playoff spot in the Western Conference. But, they've squandered too many points during a five-game winless streak (0-3-2), points that will be difficult to recoup the second half of the season, when they play 15 of their final 24 on the road, including four trips to the West Coast or western Canada.

That's why the urgency is heightened this weekend, when they host Nashville Saturday and Vancouver Sunday.

“The schedule is going to be tougher, the traveling is going to be tougher,'' defenseman Niklas Kronwall said. “Everything is going to be tougher from here on forward. We have to make sure we take care of our home ice. We haven't done that so far.''

They can't hold leads. They've blown 2-0 leads in three of their past five games (0-2-1 in those games) and four times prior to that, in games they came back to win.

Their special teams continue to be among the worst in the NHL (28th on power play, 25th on penalty kill).

They're making too many mistakes that are leading to easy goals for the opposition.

“We're a good hockey team when we're playing the way we want to play,'' captain Henrik Zetterberg said. “Unfortunately, at times we're not playing the way we want, the puck is ending up in our net. That's frustrating. We just got to turn it around.''

Wings have a tough five games ahead.

Nashville, Vancouver, Kings, Sharks, Blues.

I could see this team losing another five games, to be honest.

Abdelkader - Datsyuk - Cleary

OMG what a waste. Datsuyk's talent is being wasted on two average 4th liners.

Sad sad sad lineup. My expectations are low.

Same. I really am starting to despise Babcock with each passing game.

Cleary has 3 points in 17GP

Abby has 1 point in 17 GP

Datsyuk alone has 18 points in 16 GP

Why is this happening again ? What sort of indication are these players showing that they deserve top line minutes ? At least move Abs up and Flip down.

I can never figure out why after a win all the lines will be shuffled but if we lose they always stay the same.

Nice GDT ProPAIN, although I was expecting to see

The Wings have to win 5-3 or 1-0, they have to figure out which game they want to play. If the Preds/Trots force them to play a low scoring game, then the Wings have to play it. If the Wings score 2-3 goals, then just going and score 5 goals.
The Preds stick to their gameplan no matter what. But since they played last night ,the Wings should take advantage.
