Helene St. James: Detroit Red Wings' Pavel Datsyuk skates but still iffy for today's game vs. Minnesota

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- Detroit Red Wings forward Pavel Datsyuk skated Sunday morning and said he was a game-time decision.

The Wings take on the Minnesota Wild this afternoon at XCel Energy Center (6 p.m., FSD), with a lineup somewhat to be determined.

Coach Mike Babcock said he'd have "to make a decision" on which forward comes out if Datsyuk is able to play. He missed the last game because of a shoulder bruise, but has since skated twice.

Mikael Samuelsson will make what will be just his third appearance of the season after being sidelined by a pulled groin.

"I'm excited, for sure," Samuelsson said of rejoining the lineup. "I look forward to tonight."

On defense, Kent Huskins is coming in for Jakub Kindl, who continues to struggle to gain a foothold as a regular despite numerous opportunities. "It's frustrating," Kindl said. "I wish I had the answer."

Huskins said, "it's great" to play again after being a healthy scratch for five games. "It's my job to come back in and contribute, and I look forward to doing that."

Petr Mrazek is scheduled to get his second NHL start.

Not much going on otherwise in the injury department: Darren Helm is on the trip but isn't skating, isn't working out, and isn't remotely close to joining the lineup. Johan Franzen (hip flexor) skated, but isn't playing tonight.

Huskins in - Kindl out. Mrazek in goal. Still no word on Datsyuk. Cleary expected to have 60:00 TOI.

Wow.
Babcock is a dumbass.

Does anyone remember the awesome pass Kindl made to Andersson... just last game?

So Kronwall and Flip, two of this team's veterans, royally **** up and Kindl gets booted...

So we can watch more of the Kronwall and Unqualified Lashoff gong show?

Babcock is an absolute dumbass.

And anyone who says he's the NHL's best coach needs to stop living in the past. These are brutal decisions.

This team can't afford anymore Kronwall-Lashoff.

What a bonehead

Even if Pavel is in tonight, I don't think he's going to be that much of an impact. Honestly, I wouldnt mind letting him rest tonight...

Sent the full GDT to Shoalzie. My train was slightly delayed, so sorry for the late upload. No confirmation on the lineup (none that I could find). IIRC, Flip is supposed to play with Z, so that makes Abby our second line center if Pavs can't make it. Apart from the lineups the other stuff should be up-to-date.

Probably because we need defensemen who can play defense. And I don't think Holland would be happy if Babs sat Quincey.

Not so sure Lashoff really fits into that category. Haven't seen anything from him that would indicate he has much of a future in the NHL. Would much rather have Kindl and Huskins play over him.

Kindl sitting is dumb IMO. Sit Kronwall. Send a damn message.

Send the message that 10 points in 14 games is unacceptable and that youre hurting the team worse than a lot of guys. You take Kronwall out of the equation and that defense looks absolutely god awful.

I think Kindl has earned some playing time for sure and wouldnt have sat him but they probably want Lashoff for the PK for one game

I'm all for Kindl staying in, he needs as much ice time as he can reasonbly handle BUT I wouldn't mind seeing Huskins draw in a few more games as he was pretty steady if unspectacular the last time I watched him play.

Hoping for a solid game for Mrazek and for the team to focus on stymying any second chances for Minnesota. If the Wings are able to do this, I think we can grind out a victory against the Wild. It's an important game for standings as Minny is creeping up on us slowly.

Zetterberg bounces back this evening and leads the charge! Wings record is pretty good against Minn-ah-soww-tah

I wouldn't trade Kronwall because he's been one of our best players on the PP.

I would cut his even strength ice-time down to send a message though...he's been awful when we don't have the man advantage.

Lashoff plays the 3rd highest PK mins and isn't far behind Quincey. RWC calls him a Brad Stuart type of d-man.

He's already had his minutes cut. He's averaging his lowest EVS IT this year.
