Game Day: Flames at Maple Leafs

CALGARY FLAMES at TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS
7 p.m. ET/5 p.m. MT, Scotiabank Arena
TV: Sportsnet, Sportsnet One
Radio: Sportsnet 590 (Toronto), Sportsnet 960 (Calgary)
THE BIG MATCHUP
C John Tavares vs. LW Johnny Gaudreau

The two Johnny Hockeys hope for productive evenings; Tavares more in the spotlight with Auston Matthews sidelined at centre; while Gaudreau, Calgary’s top scorer, looks to add to two assists Saturday against Washington after a two-game dry spell. Tavares had 15 points in 12 games against the Flames as an Islander.
KEYS TO THE GAME
Miked up
Toronto head coach Mike Babcock spoke Sunday of his respect for the puck handling abilities of Calgary goaltender Mike Smith to break up Leafs cycles. Smith also has a .925 save percentage against the Leafs in 13 career games, but Frederik Andersen has owned the Flames, with a record of 7-0-0-1.
Centres of attention
Sean Monahan, Mikael Backlund and Elias Lindholm will test Leafs depth with Auston Matthews out. It could be Lindholm vs. Lindholm on a couple of shifts with Toronto’s Par moved back to the middle by Babcock.
Hold all calls
The Leafs have benefitted from only 28 power play opportunities so far this season, putting them in the NHL’s bottom five for calls drawn, while Calgary is going to the extra man on a regular basis, 45 advantages at last count, near the front of the pack. Unfortunately, they haven’t converted many.
Give it up
Babcock had a couple of biting comments about his team’s “silly” tendencies with the puck when on offence, particularly being too risky at home. But they and the Flames rank top five in giveaways.
It’s a hit
The Flames can steal a page from the Winnipeg Jets’ book and try to wear down the Leafs physically, especially in a road game. But scoring three on Saturday without Matthews for much of the game will give the Leafs a lift heading into this match.

So disappointed not being able to watch Matthews now for at least four weeks but I’m really looking to seeing how we respond. It’ll be a great test of our depth and I hope the opportunity gets Johnsson going for us.

A few people in the Nylander thread have mentioned it was stupid to sign Tavares and put us in cap hell.

I don't know if they were just trolling .... but how does it look now? Still a stupid move? You don't pass up on elite talent, especially center man.

This is why you need depth and a lot of it. There is always pretty much a guarantee in a season someone will get hurt. Your main players have the puck more so a lot of time they get hurt. This should be obvious but maybe the odd person doesn't get it.

Yes some guys are more injury prone... again depth.

Hopefully we get Nylander back soon but this doesn't really change those negotiations.

JT is the main guy for 4 weeks minimum... and Kadri steps up into a bigger role which he is capable of especially with Marner on his line. Then the 3rd and 4th lines just need to play solid hockey and the Leafs will be fine. Andy has been playing pretty solid too.

People that have been crying the blues on the Tavares signing can now all finally shut up. This was main reason that Dubas went out to sign him, for instances like this. And this should actually work in the leafs favor in Nylander negotiations. Nylander alone cannot replace a Matthews, Tavares can. Hence the reason Nylander should be paid as a complimentary player and not a star one.

The one thing I do like the look of is the Tavares line. That line is just flat out going to outwork you.

amazing what the absence of Matthews and Nylander can do to elevate a lineup; equally amazing that with those two out, our starting 3 lines still look ... decent.

Should be a competitive game tonight - go Leafs go!

You guys are playing against mike smith lol. Get a bunch of shots from the point, and you'll win no problem with how he flops around....

We're screwed :(

I'm expecting Kadri to start filling the net here. Marleau too.

Need these two to step up over the next month.

That's a big chance for Kap.

i really hope he takes it and runs with it.
get better Matty, but we will be okay i think. Tavares will help. Kadri moving up only helps him so he should take off which can only help.

........

Marincin's been fine the last few games but come on.
Sounds like Dermott was quite ill for the last week, if he lost weight and lost strength then maybe healthy scratch isn't the right word. He is eligible to dress, but if he isn't 100% Marincin has played well enough to give him another game off.

Definitely, we're not one of the best offenses in the league anymore with Matthews injured but this line up should suffice till he returns. No complaints on the lines or decisions so far.

I still like our forward lines even without Matthews. Kadri looks like he’s finallly getting his groove back, and Kapanen should be fine to play with JT and Hyman. We’re not as deadly, but we offensively we shouldn’t suffer too much.

That's definitely fair, that'd make sense.
