Helene St. James: Jimmy Howard back in, Todd Bertuzzi (back) out for Red Wings vs. Oilers today

Friday was routine for the Red Wings: lose a player to injury, call up a replacement up from the minors, get on with it.

The Wings play the Oilers at 2 p.m. today at Joe Louis Arena, with Jimmy Howard back in net but without forward Todd Bertuzzi, who is out at least through Sunday's game against the Kings because of back pain.

Bertuzzi barely could walk after Thursday's 5-1 win at St. Louis, and while a visit to a specialist Friday morning went relatively well in that surgery wasn't immediately prescribed, it's uncertain whether Bertuzzi will be back soon.

Meanwhile, the Wings welcomed Joakim Andersson, a 6-foot-2, 200-plus- pound forward who should fit in well among the bottom-six group. The Wings picked Andersson over Gustav Nyquist because they wanted more of a grinder. Nyquist is mostly finesse. Bertuzzi's absence opened a spot on the right wing of Pavel Datsyuk, and it's Daniel Cleary's to lose after scoring his first goal of the season Thursday.

Cleary said it was "good to get off the -- is it 'schneid' they call it? It's nice to be able to take some pressure off the other guys. Have to do it more often."

Gagner has 46 goals already? :sarcasm:

I'm a little disappointed they brought up Andersson over Nyquist since Bert's out. Should have just slotted him right in the Datsyuk line. Oh well. Joakim should seize this opportunity if he plays. The Oil have been dealing with pretty bad injury problems themselves. Jeez. Daniel Cleary better put on his bionic leg today playing in the top 6 or he's going to get abused out there. I'd like the see our bottom six build off of the Blues game and get the first goal today.

Set the tone at home boys! Go Wings!

Unless I completely missed something Sammy is out with a groin issue not a broken jaw.
Either way nice GDT!

Hopefully they can start a mini win steak during this homestand.

Can't wait for some Top 6 Cleary action!

:shakehead

No freaking joke. Although after he scored, you just knew Babs had him as the next man up for the top 6 if an injury happened. I mean, you HAVE to ride the hot hand.

Gotta love Cleary's quote in the article: "It's nice to be able to take some pressure off the other guys. Have to do it more often."

:laugh::laugh: No, that's ok, Dan, really, we're good. Go ahead and be a black hole for another 9 games, you earned the break. It'll take 5 of those 9 games for Babs to knock you back to the 3rd line, so you're set. :thumbu:

That awkward moment when you realize Sam Gagner is younger than Brendan Smith

:loony:

That's rich coming from the human turnover that continues to take lazy/dumb penalties. Constantly puts more pressure on his teammates.

Mike Babcock reads HFBoards. That is the only logical explanation as to why Cleary is in the top six.

Wings would be better off dressing some random fan in the stands to play in Cleary's spot.

And now I can't wait for the game when I see "WingedWheel1987" on the back of a home red jersey! :crossfing

That's a lot to fit on a jersey, but you may turn the puck over less. And hopefully wouldn't take as many bad penalties.

It really is ridiculous. Cleary plays like **** for 9 games - no demotion or cut in ice time. Cleary plays _one_ good game - promoted to a top six role.

Should've kept Tatar-Abdelkader-Cleary. Finally something that resembles a legit bottom six line. I'm sure Datsyuk will be fine..

You're reading too much into our posts- I doubt anyone is actually upset by his comments. What he said is more funny after looking at how awful he's been this season (and last) and sad at the same time, that he gets the LONG leash from Babcock.

We're going to have to beat them 5-on-5. We can't give them any freebies. Their special teams will kill us.

ah that makes a bit more sense

was just looking at the projected lineup for the Oilers

why's Yakupov on the 4th line? I thought he was doing pretty well?

The national HNIC game will be the Jets-Senators except for BC, Alberta, and SW Ontario. Those areas will get Oilers-Red Wings.

Looking at their "3rd line" that 4th looks like the real 3rd and probably will be.

Based on pregame warmup, looks like Andersson playing today, on line with Abdelkader and Tatar; and Eaves out. Cleary skated with 13, 51.

I like seeing Andersson in the lineup but Cleary in the top 6 .........................:banghead:

GDT looks good. Need to stay out of the box, and keep pressure in their zone. We should have a clear advantage up the middle today.
