Gagner is currently playing on flyers third line and second PP unit. He was also visibly invested on the defensive side of the puck through the two games so far.

Slow, prone to turnovers, can't make good forward passes. Often puts his partner in a bad spot with poor passing. Dominant around the net and down low, though. If you're in his workspace, you better be paying attention. He's a niche player but necessary at this point. If you're going to be a circus in your own zone, you may as well have guys as big as Grossmann to push back.

Precise assessment.

I think he has played better than advertised. Unfortunately, ALL of our D have been prone to turnovers, and bad forward passes.

Gagner has been scratched a few times. He has not found a great spot on the Flyers. Almost a non-entity.

For comparison's sake, Steve Downie has a VERY similar stat line. Nothing against Gagner, but I couldn't see him in our top six with Domi and Duclair also looking for spots. It also might've been a disaster. Gagner would have to be heavily sheltered. Not sure we're deep enough to do that. Besides Chipchura has more points... ;)
Grossman fills the bigger hole, by far this year. Also, we picked up some cap flexibility (though I feel like we could've gotten slightly better value seeing as we helped Philly far more than we needed a dead contract)
