Started 2 Finland games in U18 WJC's and Finland has lost both
Gaa 4,08 and save percentage 86,2 ( 862) those clearly isn't the numbers of winning goalie.
How mediocre goalie can really be.
Now in his second year in Mestis, I assume he and fellow HIFK junior product Kari Piiroinen will back up Blomqvist in Edmonton. Or could he have a larger role?
Cannot find much information on him (with a 2021 birth date he is too old for the 2023 NHL Draft).
However, he started as a 21-year-old for HIFK this past season and had a sub 2.00 goals against; earning an invitation to Finland's camp for the 2023 World Championships.
Is he a late developer that the NHL scouts missed or is his potential limited?
Numbers have dipped slightly in his second season but Taponen is again handling the bulk of the goaltending as HIFK is once again one of the top teams in Finland. With the dearth of solid goaltending in the NHL he seems to be an intriguing prospect as a UFA.
