Guys like Samsonov, Hart, etc will likely take a month or two to adjust to the AHL before settling in. This happens to just about every goalie prospect when they start out in the AHL, unless they play for a defensive powerhouse.

Samsonov is something else. Teams should gauge his trade value because his ceiling is enormous.
I assume it would take a lot to trade for him. Holtby has struggled this season and last season and only has 1 more year on his contract. It is highly likely Samsonov will be taking over then.

Wow, what a turn-around. He had horrible stats last time I checked about 6 weeks ago.

He probably spends another year in the AHL honing his still, as both Holtby and Copely are under contract next year; unless Holtby is traded, which I think unlikely.

Terrible save percentage, team in front of him must dominating if somehow he hasn't lost in 15 games.

Wonder if he's the starter in 2020.

Holtby will be 31 then, and giving a goalie of his age a long term deal isn't smart

Samsonov is on an insane run right now. He's probably already a better goalie than Phoenix
Copley.

Goalies can still be good in their mid thirties, Caps can easily decide to sign Holtby to 2-4years, keep Samsonov as an AHL starter next year then backup ( or backup next season), then trade Holtby away when Samsonov is fully ready to be a starter.

Samsonov is fully ready to be a starter. The question is what to with Holtby. Isn't the expansion draft upcoming? The Caps should do what Tampa did.
