From HockeyBuzz.com - Aivis Kalnins - 20-year old goalie and a Leafs prospect among those named KHL's best
KHL has named the best players of week 20 of the regular season.

- Ilya Konovalov (Lokomotiv) was recognized as the best goalkeeper, who won all three games of the week, including two shutouts. Konovalov turned away 98.89% of shots faced and averaged 0.34 GAA (both indicators are the best for the week). Shutout in the duel against HC “Sochi” became tenth of the season for the young goalie - he leads the league in shutouts.

Draft eligible 20-year old has been one of the best goalies in the KHL this year. Wonder where he gets drafted. I'd rather spend a mid-round pick on this guy than a mid-to-high first on Spencer Knight.

He should tell the NHL he is not coming over, stay undrafted and tgen go to the team of HIS choice. Best strategy for every Russian.
If he gets drafted he doesnt have to report you know...he cant just force the league to not draft him, thats the silliest thing ive heard

Just noticed how good and consistent his stats have been over the years yet has hardly represented Russia in youth tournaments? Weird...

The silliest thing is to rob yourself of choice.

He doesn't have to report, nor can he choose a team to negotiate with. How many player's careers got wasted because of the team they did end up with through the draft?

Once again, he has no choice in whether the league drafts him or not, and what team drafts him. And he still has a choice if thats the case, he either reports or he doesnt and can continue playing in the KHL and wait for his rights to be traded. Quit being so sensitive.

The draft system is illegal in the EU for example exactly for the reason it denies the employee choice. If a player can avoid this disadvatage packaged within the "best league inthe world" system he should go for it. The system actively and deliberately exploits the average stupidity of young players who are way too happy to get drafted which is only advantageous for the drafting teams.

Only reason he would drop in the draft, I believe would be because of his age and maybe the Russian factor. He could be the best goalie of the crop, I mean his numbers are insanely good for the KHL, if he somehow drops into the 4th Round it’ll be a steal for whoever selects him.

his numbers arent insanely good, they are good. even the starting goalies getting lit up the most outside of like 2-3 over there are hitting like .925

still he should get a mid round pick used on him

He's 8th in %SV, 6th in GAA and all goalies in front are 23 or older. He's also the only U23 starter (well Krasotkin is kind of a 1B since he played 28 of 66 games) in the KHL.

I don't know why you wouldn't take a player like this in round 3. Worst case scenario, he's a low-level NHL back up who plays some games and doesn't play that well. That'll be better than a lot of 3rd round picks who don't even play games. He's also not far from NHL ready.

Is he the most talented goalie in this draft? Probably not, but he's a top 2-3 goalie on current production. There are plenty of goalies in the NHL who are successful without being the most talented goalie.

Fun fact, he is the oldest player in the draft. So he is farther along than most.

That being said, goalies are voodoo.

When players like this are selected is there any reason to believe they would have already expressed interest in coming to NA? For example, is the fact that Ilya Konovalov was selected mid 3rd round an indication that the Oilers likely spoke to him and had reason to believe he'd come over? Or do teams take players like this in the 3rd round even if they have absolutely no idea if they will come over? What is typical?
