I understand he will sign with the Leafs so he can be coached by Francois Allaire and he knows that there is a job available once he gets familiar with NorthAmerican rinks.:yo:

Where did you hear this? Also, Francois Allaire has been terrible with our goalies, but Andersen actually plays a style that would be compatible with Allaire. I hope this is true, but I don't have my hopes up.

It's really unfortunate for Carolina. It should be noted that Andersen stressed that they wanted him to come over next season and he didn't fancy that with the two NHL spots already filled and strong competition in the AHL (don't know who they got there). He feared "drowning" in the AHL without ever getting a real chance to make it in the NHL.

Michael Smith ‏@MSmithCanes

President/GM Jim Rutherford said #Canes goalie Brian Boucher suffered a shoulder injury. Will be out 4-6 months.

The only competition for the Hurricanes backup spot is now John Muse, who has played in 16 AHL games.

The spot that WOULD have been a total gimme for Andersen will probably go to a yet-unsigned free agent. Instead of coming to camp virtually guaranteed a roster spot, Andersen gets to fight for his job.

Nice job advising your client, Rich Winter.

Plus Boucher's an impending UFA after this year AND the Canes have a history of allowing prospects under contract to play in Europe if they don't make the club out of camp (had 3 of them with that situation last year alone), which would have still allowed Andersen to make SEL level money next season if he didn't win a roster spot.

Kinda baffles me that the Ducks took him. I mean ive been a supporter of adding more goalies to maximize the chance of getting a J.Quick type guy, but if Anderson had a fairly easy spot in Carolina...I mean...Anderson is going to have to be better than Hiller, Fasth, Gibson, and Bobkov in the coming years. Don't see what was wrong with Matt Murray or Brandon Whitney (or why we couldnt take Whitney in the seventh round)

If he's not better than Fasth, Gibson, and Bobkov, then none of it really matters.

Is Fasth in the long-terms or more of a stop-gap? I guess it will depend on how he does this year, but if it turns out he's just with the Ducks for 1 year then Andersen could come over the next season and him and Hiller could run the show until Gibson is ready.

Im not sure if he realized he had an easy spot in Carolina. Didnt he agent give him bad advice or something?

Do we retain his rights for the next two years as applies to normally drafted players or is he a special circumstance due to his age? If we do retain his rights, honestly the ducks have a great situation on their hands with Andersen. He has two years to play in Sweden and keep improving his game. He may turn into a dud but honestly with the numbers I've seen and the feedback I've heard about him this kid could be a very solid goalie in the near future. I'm impressed with this pick.

I think the main reason he refused Carolina was the fact that Cam Ward is signed long term, and seen as their franchise goalie.
Andersen wants to be the starter down the line, but he realize that he is not there yet. Surprisingly he has stated that he doesn't mind to spend time in the AHL, as long has he sees that there is a possibility to obtain the starting job in the NHL at some point. Obviously he and his agent didn't feel like that was possible in Carolina.

I also think that even though he had a great season in the SEL, he would prefer to stay there for at least one more season. I believe he had offers from Sweden before eventually signed with Frölunda, but he opted to stay in the danish league for another season. Which means that he has actually only seen one season of professional hockey (outside of Denmark) so far in his career.
Interpret it the way you like, I think it shows that he is not in a hurry. He'll get where he wants to been, when the time is right.

On a side note, staying in Europe next season means that he will be available for Team Denmarks Olympic qualifier in February. That means a lot for a country who has never produced any quality goalies before.

Thought I'd give this a little bump as Andersen has been playing lights out for a very defensively weak Norfolk (outside of Lindholm).

5-1-0 in his last 6. Top 5 in GAA (skewed just a bit by a slow start) and 3rd in the league in save percentage behind Lehner and Holtby.

I'd say with Hiller, Fasth, Andersen, Gibson, Bobkov, Deslauriers Anaheim has some of the best goaltending depth in the league. Which is a lot to say considering two years ago we were trying to scrape by in the playoffs with Emery and Ellis.

EDIT: Also, looking back at my original reaction to this selection, I am eating big time crow. My new philosophy is to never doubt Anaheim's scouting.

I will never understand why the Canes ever let him go. Couldn't he have signed a deal and then stayed in the SEL? Hurricanes goalie depth has been stretched since Mike Murphy walked and Cam Ward was injured. Dan Ellis is a very serviceable backup. Justin Peters projects as a journeyman backup at this point. John Muse looks like a long term project. Mahalak/Altshuller/Olson are all years away and none have displayed the upside Andersen had.

Great grab by Anaheim who could have the greatest goaltending depth in the NHL.

Maybe they didn't have a choice.
If you wanted to be an NHL starting goalie, would you stay with a team that has Cam Ward?
