Actually, I feel you are lacking a #1 defenseman. I'm not sure Bouwmeester will do it, heck, I'm not so sure Pitkanen is any better than Bouwmeester either.
I feel Dmitri Kallinen might be a guy I'd go for in their stead. He's a little further along developmental-wise, and I think he's going to be a real fine defenseman in this league.
I'd keep Jordan Leopold for sure, and Allen - well, I like Allen.
Kallinen
Leopold
Volchenkov
Allen
As my top 4 would look interesting. Not sure whom would be the #1 in the end (anything can happen), but all of Kallinen, Volchenkov, or Allen could turn into Adam Foote/Mattias Ohlund-types.
Jordan Leopold gives you a hell of a future power play quarterback. Kallinen has a big shot there too, though I'd prefer a guy like Paul Martin to Volchenkov, gives them one more guy who can play solid offensive hockey. Then again, I'm partial to a up-tempo, two-way blueline.
For the final two, I am not really fans of either of your last two guys. I'm not sure either will be every day NHL'ers to begin with.
I'd swap at least one for JM Liles, whom is just a solid two-way blueliner. Don't be fooled by his size, he is very good in his own zone too. Just small...
Anyhow, here's my ideal blueline full of guys I'd take for a fine top 6 defense without going too overboard:
Jordan Leopold, Bryan Allen, Dmitri Kallinen, John-Michael Liles, Paul Mara, and Brooks Orpik
I think everyone there has offensive instincts, if not always posting big numbers (Allen and Orpik I don't think will ever exceed 25 points a season, but they do actually have decent instincts as to weather or not to jump up, and are decent passers). Leopold, Liles, and Mara represent my offensive defensemen, and all three but Leopold are, I think, going to be very polished in their own ends.
I went with Mara over guys like Pitkanen and such mostly because he's more mature, and I feel he's closer to being what I'd need than Pitkanen is. I'm not going to just take guys because they might be something, I'd rather go for guys who are a bit closer to being sure bets.
